Folks, the wife has determined that a new set of tires are in my jeeps future.... :D Unfortunately this puts me in the predicament of having to decide between 2 sizes...

the jeep will likely see more pavement than mud for the next 3-4 years, ATs are probably the tread patern.

I have a set of ford 8" wide rims to put the new tires on, the back spacing is the same as the late model 6" stock jeep rims I have now.

seeking pics of 9.50 and 10.50 tires mounted on 8 inch rims. I am trying to decide if I have enought clearance to mount 10.50s on the 8 inch rims and not ruin my turning circle, and which will be the best trade off between looks and retained power. (3.73 gears in stock 44 and 27) modified ross steering...

    you may fire away.... :)

I have 10.5 X 31" tires and I have lost some turning radius because of tire width.

I have 31x10.5-15 ATs on 8 inch wide ford factory wheels. No problems at all. Nothing rubs, and no real problems with turning (thanks to power steering)

Well this is what it comes down to... a choice. first, I do not intend to use the jeep for any rock crawling competitions or to win the next Paris-Drakar, It will see alot more pavement than dirt for the next few years at least.

Has anyone else noticed that the majority of tire manufacturers have evolved their AT tires into an oversized street tread tire??? not very Macho..

on stock steel 8" rims: budget dictates I make a tough choice should I go for---

    1. 30-9.50 MTs or
    2. 31-10.50 ATs

    what would you do???

I really miss not being able to get the old 700 - 15 ground grip or mud grip tires that were around in the 60's and 70's.

Anyone know a present day source of those type of tires?

If you want a narrow tire appearance, go 9.5
If you want a somewhat ballooned tire appearance, go 10.5 (8" rim + 2.5 looks nice)

    However, with the size choices, I personally wouldn't even consider the 30's but I am a 32 & 33 kinda Jeeper ;)

Have Boyink post some close-ups of his. That is a good look that appears stock but up close are quite full-sized.

    Randy,

I think you'd be disappointed if you went with anything smaller than a 31 x 10.50. I really like mine and I don't have the new stock spring in yet. I have the 50yr old flat springs and I have no trouble with the tires.

I know this size isn't a consideration, but for comparison purposes, here is a pic of my 32x12.5 MT's on 10" Ultras.

O.K. I have to add my input. Wider tires dont decrease your turning radius if you have proper backspace. However taller tires will affect turning radius even with huge offset rims. Sorry i just had to get this off my chest, Been buggin me. Another thing, i would go with at least 31 inch tires. Mine are 31s and look too small to me. i am planning on 33s myself. Good luch with whatever you decide.

I agree with you on the diameter part, but the difference in wall bulge between a 10.5 and a 9.5 is what I was concerned about.

thanks for all the pics guys, I'm zeroing in on what I need. :coffee:
