where is everyone mounting speakers in the early CJ's? I've been looking for speaker boxes but everything is for later models. I'm not looking to go crazy with the stereo I just want to listen to the radio. pics would be very helpful.

I don't have speakers now, My '66 rattles and the glasspacks are too loud to hear anything on a radio. On a previous jeep I used cheap speakers with universal plastic housings and stuck them down with double sided tape to under my back seat. I always used cheap speakers because they got wet a lot and didn't last too long.

Had 6" in the dash for awhile. Plenty of options for speaker boxes on the fenderwells or in the rear if you don't want to run a backseat.

I've given up on radios in Jeeps - between having to crank it so loud just to hear it, and then worrying about it getting stolen it's just easier to do without.

i bought a set of 6x9 speaker boxes from a marine boating store, and i also bought a water proof box that the headunit goes in. they use them on boats all the time. i plan on mounting mine in the overhead just behind my seats . they are low profile and do not hang down much. i do not have these installed so i cannot say how they work, but i do know that water will never egt in them

Heh...there's the vents someone was asking about.

Have to see those speaker enclosers closer up. Those little pics are terrible.

Also - is it just me or do their fender flares not have the marker light cutouts?

I'm using large marine speakers on the wheel wells and smaller ones on the tranny cover.

Somewhere around here, I think in the fab section, you can see ghetto_fab's new dashboard, looks like he's got a speaker on either side of the dash.

I've also heard of people getting seats with the speakers built right in. Would probably take care of the noise issue!

I have some surface mount marine speakers tucked up on each side under the dash. But, I would be just as happy without any radio, for the reasons stated above.

At one time, Peter had speaker boxes mounted behind each seat on the floor of the Tux. They've long since disintegrated now. We don't have a working radio in any vehicle we own (that I can think of) so we don't worry about that anymore.

Yup, you need to check out the fabrication forum. R) I mounted two 4" speakers on the sides. It works good. You still can't hear anything over 50mph though.

I kinda like the idea of having speakers on the rollcage above your head.

I used to think about going seperate drivers for bass, mids and highs. Mount some tweeters up in the cage - close to your ears. Mids in the dash, and a tube sub up under the dash. Then a headunit hidden somewhere, worked by remote.

I mounted a couple of Rat Shack weatherproofs up behind the dash. I screwed a piece od 1x4 board on each side to the lip where the side panel is mounted to the cowl & the spaekers are attached to the boards.

I run the speakers off an amp with "low level" inputs hidden in the engine compartment. I ran an extension input cable out to a DIN connector mounted to the bottom of the dash & use the wife's CD/walkman/whatever as the sound source. When parked we just unplug & throw it in the glove box.

I couldn't be without tunes/ news in my vehicles. And the Jeep is my DD. I have two cheapy Realistic speakers under the dash, and 6X9's in carpeted enclosures on the rear wheel houses. I finally (a few months ago) put in a CD player..... Works great!. The rear speakers are held down w/ bungies, so when I pack the Jeep for camping/ trail runs, I just take them out...

I agree that having /some/ music in the jeep would be nice. Though anything behind you is pretty much lost to the road noise. I have some 6x9's the PO installed/bolted down on each side of the rear seat, and I just bought some speakers from 4wd.com (http://4wd.com/shop/productdetail.asp?productsku=91970&model=tj) Select Increments Centra Pod. They are supposed to fit a 68 CJ5, but we'll see about that when I get them. If they work nicely, I'll post pictures of the setup. I'm a bit concerned about the room in front of my shifter.

I made a wooden box and mounted it to the my tranny cover. works out pretty nicely. Also made a box that went behind the roll bar but f you had rear passengers it woul;d smash them in the forhead. Not good.

Headphones work well, but are slightly illegal (at least they were in CA). If you wear ear buds, noone will notice on the highway. Be sure to watch for flashing red lights in your RVM. Also, take them out between disks/tapes/whatever and listen for odd noises, and watch your gauges.

I mounted some weatherproof speaker boxes, PyleDrivers, on the firewall
almost against the body panels under the dash. They are not visible. The
only drawback is you really have to turn it up higher than usual. But it's a
Jeep. I also bought a speaker box to but in the back for use when cruising.
It ran about $14 from Pep Boys. It be taken out very easily.

I got an I-pod velcro-ed to the dash, and use the supplied ear pieces. Works ok, if you don't mind listening to the same songs over and over.
However, the I-pod can hold 1,000 songs. It might be a while to go through them all. Plus you can get a ear peice splitter, for a few bucks, so your passenger can listen as well, and you can just unvelcro it and take it with you to solve the theft issue.

    Pioneer surface mounted car speakers
    Model: TS-X200
    Surface Mount 3-Way Speaker

I have the previous generation of this model installed on the underside of the roll bar that crosses above and behind your head. Each speaker is mounted so that it faces the back of your head. Have had them for several years and still operate fine. You can evan hear at freeway speeds. I will try to take a picture tonight and post tomorrow.
