Serious Off Road Suspension

    A D30 with upgraded alloy axle shafts and larger outer U-joints is a decently tough axle.

    I found the stock D30 in my 75 to be flexy. I had R&P Axle build me a D44 the correct length nd added disk brakes at the same time.. I also installed a 2-1/2 " BDS LIFT.. I am toying with the idea of swapping in a YJ spring set up. I am real tired of the lumber wagon suspension. Runnin 33X10.50

    Old Man Emu YJ Springs are the best Serious Off Road Suspension in my opinion. Very Soft ride.

    Think I'll stick with the 27 and think about the shims. The 3cm clearance for drag linkage is what's tapping the springs so a shim may work

    Scott was there any fabrication involved? I saw a kit online from some rocky road I believe and it look like you had to drill some holes and that was about it. I'll look around on this board too but just wanted to get your opinion. as far as I understand it the stock cj5 leafspring mounts are too narrow and the forward leaf spring shackle needs to move forward a smidge?

    This is the kit I have been looking at.. I called and talked to em last year.. Just do not have the coins right now. Besides this knee surgery is puttin the dampers on most everything. I just had my son measure the tie rod and drag link clearance. ~ 2" from spring to bottom of draglink and tie rod.

    I used their kit. Just make sure you use the heavy duty spring. Medium duty is to soft in the front.

    I didn't modify the spring mounts on the axles. I just bolted on the new springs with their spring plates. I also welded the spring mounts after I bolted the wider ones on.

    Where did you weld the spring pads at?? Mine are already welded to the axle tube? Does Rocky Road recommend using the existing spring pads?

    Existing spring pads: I don't see any problems using the original pads. I've been running these springs for two years now with no problems.

    I run 33 10.50 15 bfgs on my CJ6. I have a BDS suspension 2 1/2 inch lift that I like, good ride and flexy. I run a dana 44 front, but I don't need it, a Dana 30 is more than adequate. A dana 27 is good for most applications. Dont be caught up in all the hype of the mags saying you need a dana 60 or 44 or full width axles to be a serious off roader. Stock Jeeps have been in the backcountry and in the war zones for a long time. Its fun to modify them and make them unstoppable so the choice is yours, enjoy it and have fun and good luck!
