Wife had off today, and it was abnormally cool and moist this morning, so I headed up into the hills with the jeep for a load of wood.

At some point in it's life, someone removed the seat belts from my Commando. Bought and installed some new ones yesterday.

Sigh, belatedly washed off Colorado. Changed the plugs, jetted back to flatland. Retimed and vacuum gauge balanced. Changed the oil and filter. Added the bling.
How early do the passes start to clear? :(

Finally got my replacement Charge controller from amazon. The first one I ordered (Rich Solar) was never shipped but amazon got my money, I am in dispute with the CC company. The second one EPEVER MPPT Solar Charge Controller arrived and has been installed.:gaah:

    The answer is "it depends"
Elevation, winter snowpack, and summer temps all make a difference.

Replaced my ignition switch. The “start” function failed in Colorado and we were under the hood jumping the solenoid to start for the last couple weeks. :poo:

Starting to look at putting this 231 into my CJ
    [IMG]

the exhaust manifold has a big gate valve on the driver side. EGR I guess. I chopped off the vacuum actuator and welded the valve full open.

Replaced the valve stem seals on the 76.

The previous owners were not nice to this engine as far as oil changes. It also had the improper PCV valve in it which didn't help I'm sure. Nearly all the stem seals were bad. Surprised it didn't smoke like a freight train.

That valve is vacuum actuated or has a bimetal coil so that when the engine is cold driver side exhaust flows through the intake manifold and into the passenger manifold helping the engine get to temp quicker. Effectiveness is debatable. I also removed mine.

Yesterday before coming back home for the weekend, a coworker and I were looking over the 3b and I found more broken stuff. Probably from when I jumped it last weekend.

Lately I've had the itch for another project. I feel the 3b is as good as it'll ever be without tearing it to pieces to fix all my mistakes.

A gremlin came up in CO. When the stars line up just right the steering joint setscrew would pop right into the unused grille mounting hole. This happened on Tin Cup Pass, locking the steering. At first i thought the steering box was wasted. Joe eagle eyed the offense though while we had the front jacked up trying to diagnose.
Cutoff wheel got a taste, a shot of shake and shoot after file cleanup .

The transfer case oil pan gasket was leaking on Ted, so I replaced that and while I was at it, I put on the aluminum pan that was given to me. I also made a new transmission support to replace my *cough* cheesy support I made years ago.

Grease the front wheel bearings twice yearly says the manual, figured how hard could that be ... pretty complicated with the lock-o-matic hubs!

I have been going through my Jeep and correcting the fruits of probably 10 years of neglect by the previous owner. I have been cleaning up wiring and cleaning corroded connections. Today I got to the oil pressure sender; after cleaning it up shiny and putting it back together with dialectic grease I picked up about 8-10 lbs of oil pressure at all RPMs!

Was hearing a whistling noise at idle and just off idle for quite a while. Couldn't quite place it. Went to check my base timing and noticed I had base timing with and without the vacuum line connected. The vacuum advance canister had sprung a leak. Pulled the dist cap and checked with my hand vacuum pump and got nothing but a whooshing air noise. Orileys was able to get me an accel vac advance same day (Mallory HEI on this Jeep from a previous owner) and I got it put back together with a new set of plug wires as I didn't know the age of the ones that were on there.

Fired it up first crank and the idle is much smoother now.

I finally got my '68 project insured so I could take it out on the road.

I was driving the jeep up a hill in my neighborhood when I hit a bump. I heard a bang then a thump, thump, thump. I turned around and drove home. A few years ago ITLKSEZ worked on boxing the bare frame, installing Dauntless motor mounts, and building the winch mount. He used the springs I supplied him to figure out where to install the mounts. When I picked up the frame, I remember him mentioning the spring mounts were only tacked in place, in case I wanted to move them. I sort of forgot about that warning, but when I heard the bang, I suddenly remembered and thought maybe one of the mounts broke free. Back at home, I looked at the mounts and they seem ok.

Zooming in on the bracket, it is indeed only tacked in place with a tiny weld at the front and the back of the seam.

How would I know whether to adjust the location of the bracket before welding it in place? Paging @ITLKSEZ

I would use the shackle angle as the indicator, then measure to the rear eye, and weld them both on at the same length. The shackle angle looks pretty good now.
