I have just purchased a 1968 Cj5 and have a few questions. I am familiar with the older Jeeps , and currently have a 1952 M38A1. But with this latest purchase I have noticed some thing that I have not seen before. The transmission shifter barely clears the hole in the floor plan. The shift tower is not centered in the the hole in transmission cover. This Jeep has a Buick V6 and it has all of the badges on the Jeep which leaves me to believe the motor is original, but quite honestly in looks to me like the transmission is about a 1 1/2 or 2 inches rearward than it should be. I am pretty sure the rubber boot will work, either is this normal or and I showing signs of OCD.

Can you post a picture of what you are talking about? Is the transmission a 3 speed?

Knowing what transmission you have is important to answer this question.

The transmission appears to be a t-14.

AS you can see the shift tower looks to be a little too far rearward.

Check the engine stay cable. It may be adjusted too tight.

As an aside, the M38A1 has a different rubber boot than the CJ5.

The military boot is sealed to the shift tower and fits through the floor pan. The civilian is mounted on the top of the pan, and is open beneath.

Probably less concern about clearances with the civilian type.

This and the motor mounts too. It does look like everything is either too far backwards or the body is on the frame a little too far forward.

After examining the motor mounts and transmission mounts everything seemed fine. The previous owner had placed spacers between the crossmember and the frame so the exhaust would be above the skid plate. After I remove those it should be fine. Thanks for the guidance.

The spacers look like mine and I think they are correct, except I think that is twice the number or spacers - I think its only 2 per side, not 4. But others here know a lot more than me.

Mine had two pieces of hardwood about 1" thick. I don't think they were original, but I replaced them with 1" metal stock drilled to match..
