I stumbled upon this website yesterday when researching a related topic. It is the most thorough explanation of driveline angles I've found to date. Kudos to the author, Roger Brown from 4Crawler Offroad, for gathering this info and explaining it in as simple terms as possible (without needing a physics degree to understand it). I thought I'd post it up here for reference.

Here is a link to the original page with working links.

The picture and description of a double Cardan joint as a Constant Velocity joint (CV joint) is incorrect. A double Cardan joint halves the angle of the individual u-joints so halves the velocity change but does not eliminate it as a CV joint does, and it certainly doesn't cancel it out. Common misconception I see perpetuated all over the internet and even in magazines, including by people in the industry who should and frequently do know better.

One of my informative books is a 1937 elemtary aoutmotivei instruction manual It is written in plain terms that any GI should understand. Book 120 if you can find it. Pretty much covers everything from the front bumper to the rear bumper including all of the changes in front steering when using front or rear shackles Several graphs about how Ujoint velociity and how it changes with angles. It has something like 8 pages about how carbs work. OK, it is what was being used in 1937 but it explained a lot about what some of those parts are in there for.
