That's correct, the canisters absolutely should not drain. The center tube has a whole near the top for the oil to return but that's it. The conversation is about spin on filters mounted upside down. The correct filter has to be used so it doesn't drain, which would be a filter with an anti-drain back valve. Rick says his is always empty which means he needs a different filter which, hopefully, won't drain. ;)

I've no doubt the gauge shows pressure right away, but anything flowing will take the path of least resistance. I can imagine that in this case that would be into the filter until it fills up and starts returning. Until then I can only imagine that the rest of the engine wouldn't be getting the full flow it needs. That may or not be an issue to worry about, but I know more than one of us thinks it could be. ;)

Mine mounts on the firewall and puts the filter in a position so that when you spin it off, it doesn't spill. Uses a PH-8A FRAM filter. Very common on a lot of engines. I will take a pix and see if I can find a brand name if I remember. Got a lot going on right now.

I agree with you Glen, that is why I changed the one on my new motor.

Eti engineer, I just saw an "Oil Filter Relocation" kit at JC Whitney for $15. 3 bolts and 2 oil lines and you can mount it anywhere you want it. Then spin on a filter and you are done. We used to use them on the old air cooled VW's. All they had from the factory was a screen for an oil filter.

In this system the filter empties every time the motor is shut down. Fills back on startup. No starvation issues. No major mess when changeout time comes. Ya’ll don’t be so prissy about a little oil spill. That’s what rags are made for.

Glen it wouldn't take a lot work to just turn the original filter right side up, it is just an adapter. I honestly considered it.

So does the oil drain back out the canister? If everyone is talking about making a mess with either filter ,i would imagine that there is oil in the filter ????????????????

Yes there is oil that runs off of the filter. I hold a shallow pan in my left hand and pull the filter up and move the pan under it and only spill minimal oil (yeah right). ;)

I was looking at my motor the other day and discovered that I do not have an oil filter anywhere 67 with the f134.. I do not know if it was removed by a previous owner or if it can from the factory this way.. where would I go to find the oil filter canister setup and everything I needed to put one on it?
