Seriously, I have an m8000 in the garage for the heap when I have it back together. Looking for an 8274 (had one on my old 76 powerwagon) in good shape as deals to pop up from time to time.

I'm not fond of the 'free tow truck' label some folks who go in the woods seem to see...

I have a more-powr-puller I take on occasion now (mine has sprung-latch-springs and is sorta, well, you gotta know what you're doing). I use this all the time felling trees around houses with a tow-strap and a chain or two for such as to keep 'direction' ensured (if I foul my cuts, wind, etc.). honestly been a while since I've used it... need to go toss it in my truck and take it for a ride so it's not so lonely in the shed.

(looks like this, but I think mine is a 1950's model: https://www.wyeth-scott.com)

I didn't have a winch then, but you can bet I was wishing I had one. I do now.

Yea winches can sit for long times without use and are an expensive tool that may not get used much. I don't have one on my jeep, I never take my jeep in places I know I'll need one. But I have struggled to get my jeep before with a come a long. Now my 4 wheeler does have a winch and gets used a lot, every time it leaves the garage the winch gets used for one reason or another.

I have only a few occasions use my winch for myself. I have however used it tons on other people or for utility purposes. I consider it a necessary tool for my purposes. Not all people use their Jeeps as I do and not everyone needs one.

2X. Mine gets used at least every other time I'm out-as often as not to remove trees from the trail. But they've gotten me off a lot of rock over the years and once served to keep a rear spring hanger attached to the B. I don't go anywhere without one-period.

I've also never liked mounting them above the bumper. Usually a better pull angle mounting them low and less air obstruction for the radiator. A few photos of the latest version on my 3B. I set it up so ether the older Warn/Belleview's or the 8274 can be used. Not quite finished but close. Need new light mounts and figure out something for the license plate.

Years with and without a winch on the jeeps... other 'manual' means employed without. Lets just say I'm more comfortable with a winch than without on when and where I can go with the jeep. It probably also depends on where you live and the type of wheeling you do.

I will say I've used my winches more on 'others' than I have to pull myself out of things. Even had a situation on Holy Cross where it took 3 others and the guys own winch to keep from dropping off a cliff face.

Never bothered me, it's just what you do on the trails.

I started this thread. The reason I wanted a winch on my '70 CJ5 is because I found the one on my '76 CJ5 to be so useful. This past May I had a tall maple cut down that was causing a problem.

The 2' wide trunk was straight for 40'. I cut the trunk into four sections and used the winch on the jeep to pull the logs uphill out of the woods to a clear area.
Then I pulled each section with the jeep over near the road where a portable sawmill could be brought in.

After 6 months, I had a guy come with a portable mill and turn the logs into boards. After they dry a year or two, I'll turn them into furniture.

I look forward to using the winch to extricate myself when stuck, but until then, I have several planned utility purposes at home.
