V6 re-install motor mounts on or off?

    When you guys are putting your 225's back in do you get the engine nestled in and then put the mounts back on or do you put it in complete? I took mine out last night, left them on and it came out smooth but with the assembly tipped up just enough to let the mounts clear there wasn't a lot of room to un-couple before it had to start working clear of the steering box. Thought I had better ask if leaving them off is the way to go. Bone stock '66 cj5. Thanks

    In my experience just working on cars sometimes they need to be loose. Get engine in close, then put them on. Sometimes its easier to do a little more and it actually saves time

    I usually do it with the mounts on but sometimes need the mounts loose to allow for adjustment.

    I never take the motor mounts off. The engine comes out and goes back in with them on. Chevys, Buicks, VW's, Willys. I do it all the same way. There is my preference, yours might be different. maybe you will like to leave on on and the other off, maybe you will like to take them both off or like me never take them off until they are bad.     Mounts on... but then I pull the whole drive train at once - engine, tranny, tcase as a unit.

    and to reduce confusion - it goes back in the same way.

    I figured it's probably not a deal breaker either way, but there's usually a preferred method. Edit- Okay, Thanks guys, I almost never take them off on autos. Sorry about getting antsy, I'm heading out to toss it together this morning. Thanks!!

    Well, right or wrong it went back in with little hassle. Waiting for my BIL to show up and give me a hand with the heater box, other than that I think it's ready for a test drive.

    didn't remember . engine has only been out once . but that was over 30 years ago . good luck with test drive

    Yeah, the last time I pulled a V6 I was young and strong. Pulled the heads and intake, stood on the frame and set the motor on the grille. Stood on the floor and lowered it to the ground. Oh, to be that age again.

    No doubt, even if just for a day. It works nice again, about 10 miles is all I got to shake it down some but it feels good. Since I'm to stupid to read the manual I think I may have dropped the ball by not loosening the little torque cable that runs from the bellhousing to the frame? With the engine tipped up a little it seemed like there just wasn't as much "shake" in it as I was expecting, and it wanted to favor the driver's side some, looking back I got to wondering if that was why. I've got two early cj5's that will run, at least for the time being, and I couldn't be happier.
