Mine are still connected, but are not "tied" to anything to hold them up in the air.

They do have the little check-valve thingies on the ends.

What happens if I submerge them?

Are they really needed? Can't I just cap them off?

If you’re Jeep ever sees any water off-road your present set-up is inadequate, you need check valves. Without valves you allow water to stream into your axle housing, or worse, capping them does not allowing your axle to breathe which results in blown seals which THEN let water in.

Some folks have had good luck with removing the worthless cap on the stock breather, and then attaching an 18" length of flexible vinyl hose to the nipple. Then wrap the hose into a loose coil and secure it with tie-wraps. The coil should be in about a 3-4" coil, with the end facing down.
This way, it keeps water out, but the differential can breathe. You can also see if water is getting trapped in the coil, and it is a simple matter to remove the hose and blow the water out.

Just what I was going to say! I would like to add though that I've seen people put on those cheap clear plastic small fuel filters to keep dirt and water from working their way up into the hose. I've done this with the race Jeep and it works well. Nickmil.

On my front axle the breather sits right beside the top of the radiator tank, it wouldn't even need a breather on it placed here.

So, the breather should be somewhat higher than the max depth of water you intend of crossing?

Yes the higher you can mount it the better.
