i was reading the link pages this morning and according to the page 5 link that howard posted, it says to arrange the convex side towards the case. and it does not match the picture as it shows it going away from the case half as oldtime described, so even the instructions from dana are contradicting. mine was setup just as the picture showed.

You definitely have some used disks and plates in the mix.
Yes the curved Bellville is humped out and away from the case half.
Pictures for D44 assembly in all other Jeep publications verify that.
Likely that the first disk is not a Bellville which implies "smooth clutch pack".

i kind of thought some of the clutches were used. pretty sure i paid for a new clutch pack. oh well i guess seeing as it's been a couple years until i installed the axle in the jeep i can't go back on him. i just looked at the reciept and did in fact pay $75 for a clutch kit. that tells me that was a smooth kit or he just charged me and used the old clutches. this is why i really hate bringing things for other people to work on. you don't know what they did until you take it apart yourself and find if they really did what they said they did.
i just placed the order for an aggressive kit and should be here hopefully by this weekend. i might order a set for the dana 30 as well seeing as when i bought it the clutches were not changed.

well...got the new clutches today and hope to get them in saturday morning. now is the stuff i need "friction modifier" or is it "limited slip additive" that i need to soak these puppies in? the funny thing is these clutches look exactly the same as what i took out of the case only i KNOW these are new. meaning there are two convexed pieces at each side of the case. one with ears and one with splines. the drawing of the dana 70 is how the other clutches were setup and that is how this aggressive pack looks like it is going to be so what am i gaining?

another question is....do they need to be submerged in a container or just rubbed on and stored in a container or both?

I don't know anything about using that stuff.
Like I say I have been running straight Mobil One gear lube in my Powr Lok Axles since 1984 with zero problems.
I have now converted every one of my half dozen plus axles to Power Loks and will continue using Mobil One.

I'm curious if your new clutches are all steel, or do they have some sort of friction material bonded onto them.

Before assembly the friction material clutches need soaked for 24 hours before assembly. The steel clutches need thoroughly coated with lube before/during assembly or they will gall against each other until the lube works between them. By that time the damage is done. Damhik.

these don't seem to have any "material" on the clutches as they seem to be all steel. i'm still puzzled as to what i'm going to gain here except that i have new clutches. the clutch pack that was in the unit has the same discs and plates as what i bought new. so why would it be aggressive if what i had is the same as what i bought and all i had was one wheel peel?.

Are they the exact same thickness? Can you install an "extra" piece on each side to make it really tight? We do this on some of the BMW E30/Z3 clutch-type limited slips.

i'm going to measure the thickness of all the clutches and compare them. i would really like to know which "extra" disc to put in there and where. also going to inspect the cross shafts a little closer to see if there is an excessive amount of wear. i would really like this thing to perform as close to a posi without breaking things as possible.

got all the clutches soaked (almost a week) and put back into the case halves. with a little help i set it up nice and tight and should have this running by the end of the afternoon tomorrow. i forgot to measure the new vs. old clutches to check thickness but oh well.
