T-case id is easy. If it has a centered differential in the rear, its a model 20. If the rear end is offset with a short axle on the passenger side, its a model 18.
would need more info on the transmission. You might have to crawl under with a flashlight and have a looksee. Best guess is a T14 or T90.

Most likely it will be a T14 or T18. Is it a V8?? If a V8 then maybe a T15, but most likely a T14, a T18 was the HD option for the commando

Straight 6 3speed tranny, going to put a v8 in it trying to figure out if tranny and transfer case will hold up to a 360 , or if i should look into another tranny transfer combo ??

The T14 will not hold up unless you are very easy on the go pedal. The t18 or T15 would be more than capable to the V8. The Dana 20 is jsut fine for the V8, no porblems there.

If it is a T14 it will be in raised leters on the rear passenger side near the top of the case. there will be a half round looking rib about an inch wide that runs from the lower aft to the upper front of the case on the passenger side. the raised numbers will be above the aft end of this rib.

Yeah Dan is right, the T14 came behind either the 232 or 258 inline 6 in a '72 Commando. The T14 isn't strong enough for a V8. The cheapest route that will survive behind a 360 is probably a T15 or T150 from a V8 CJ. I believe you'll need the bellhousing too in both cases.
