I have a tub from a 79 CJ5 that I bought for some parts, now the tub is shot basically a worthless piece of rusty boat anchor, but I do have a clear title and vin plate. Can you sell just the title and vin plate? and do you think I could find a buyer for just those items? Let me know your opinions.

I wouldn't advertise it much. Just hang on to it and find someone that needs it or you may have the opportunity to buy a jeep 10 years from now with no title.

Technically, it's illegal, but done all the time. Only time it's a problem is when it's blantently advertised and some butt wants to cause trouble.

Years ago I used to go to Carlisle and Hershey swap meets when I was growing up. It was nothing to see several vendors selling just that. Then some cops caught wind and got authorities to shut everyone down that was doing it and not allow it.

Just be careful. Theorhetically, you aren't supposed to sell them on ebay. We have seen some, but normally the wording is "for collector's only" or something similar. Get my drift? ;)

You may just want to watch the threads here, I have seen several mention people buying jeeps without titles. PM and make a deal and both of you win :D

Isn't removing the vin plate off the body illegal?

I guess you could claim the body fell apart around the vin plate and all that was left was the plate.

Yes, it is illegal. That's why you don't want to talk about it too much.

Hang on to it unless you really need the cash. As stated, you may need it later or someone around here may need it someday. Never know...

It is illegal to sell just the VIN plate and title because there is no real vehicle. The CJ7 that I just got done building has a fiberglass body and fenders. The big question is, how much of the original vehicle can you replace without filing for a new VIN (which is a huge pain in the #&%). The only thing I have on my Jeep that can be considered original is the hood and grille. The title says "1975 Jeep two door". I checked with our state police and they were amazed I was even asking. They say there is no way of telling that my title and VIN are not original and with the vehicle they came on.
    Good Luck

Thats interesting, it seems the only way to really verify that its the correct vehicle would be to look at the vin#. I too have wondered how far you can go. I would really like to find a new body tub, and if I do that I might as well design a new frame and rollcage etc.... So there wouldn't be any vin on it. I could, if I wanted to, just make it into a cj7 or cj6 to gain some more space. But would it be legal?

Had a roomate that needed a title verified by the police for some reason. They needed to look at the vin on the frame. He talked to them and they said they didn't know where it was stamped on early jeep frames (50's m38a1). So he just found a spot on the inside of the frame rail and used some metal letter punches to stamp it in there. Policeman came out and said it looked good. Then my roomate went under there and realized one of the numbers or letters was backwards! :D

    Hey Chuck,

I tried to send you another PM but it says your inbox is full. Title is clear, no liens etc. Delete some msgs from your inbox and I'll send you another pm explaining it more.

It is not legal; it is done all the time.

On an old jeep nobody really cares unless you tell DMV that you are doing it.

Since the Jeep was unchanged (virtually) for almost 30 years, most people can't tell what year was what.

However, on a newer car, say a 2001 Corvette, DMV will be a little more aggressive.

DMV here in Ky bounced a title on me for an 84 F-150 because the serial number did not exist per their data base.

On later model autos there are special rivets to mount the vin plate. Theoretically, those rivets are never for sale, so if someone xfers a plate and uses rivets, the rivet will tell if the plate was swapped.

The easiest way to sell the title is to leave the plate attached to the vehicle and sell it as in poor shape, but with clean title. Whoever buys the jeep can do whatever he wants with it including transferring the vin tag. You haven't participated in his doing something illegal.

I bought a rusty frame from a guy in Washington once, with a clean title and VIN plate. He went ahead and sent me the title and VIN tag, and I'll pick up the frame when I'm "in the area"... [if you get my drift]

So what you're saying is that you have a rusty tub for sale with a clean title and VIN tag.... RIGHT? ;)

I think my question was more of a what if question.

No one really seems to care with old jeeps since they all look alike anyway. But, what if your vehicle is involved in an accident or a crime or something? Wouldn't the police want to verify the vin? I am sure the insurance company would. I know vehicles get sold all the time without anyone checking the vin, but you never know.

I would hate to put all the effort into a vehicle only to finish it and have someone disputing the ownership or legality of the vehicle.
