Slidehammer is what you need to get the axle out. Also I meant cup instead of cone. Does your axle have the grease fittings on each side for the bearing lube?

Ya, i'll try to rent one from the auto store tomorrow. As for the fittings- yep, I do have those and they seem to be in working order.

Before renting the slide hammer, try using the brake drum slid on reversed on the studs, with the nuts started just a couple of turns. Use the brake drum as the slide weight and see if that works.

Another quick question. I was looking at the differential and the bearing caps. The cap on the axle long side seemed dry. So I pulled the bolts out and you can see that the bolts holding the long side bearing cap are rusted and the short side are coated with gear oil and look really nice. Is that normal? Wouldn't oil be going all over the place so that both sides are getting lubed up? This is also the side that the axle is stuck on... Seems odd to me. Maybe it was running low on gear oil for a long time and just not splashing over there?

Two of the bolts go through the carrier and the ends are exposed to the elements. Common for those two bolts to get rusty like that. I can't remember which side though.
