Just looking for thoughts on Pertronix( or other brands) electronic ignition module for the 225.

    Thanks Wade

I've been running a Pertronix in mine for over a decade.
Many others on here will swear by the HEI.
If you do a search you should come up with lots of reading on this topic.

I'm running pertronix, I couldn't get the points right so it made a big diffrence.

I have sense added msd, and a coil with the pertronix. I like the msd does well with the jeep. Hei swap would be easier and cheaper if had to do again.

Another possibility is to run the MSD capacitive discharge model with points (Kettering trigger). Moving the switching duty to the MSD module makes the points last a long, long time. And you get the multiple hot spark advantage of the MSD, which is really a step up from conventional ignition like either the original points or HEI. IMO the GM HEI is a downgrade from the Pertronix/MSD combo.

Tim- what about putting MSD on the HEI?

Or - a Jacobs box on HEI? If someone has done this I'd be interested in how it worked and the parts/wiring required.

Can be done ... but then there is no need for the module in the HEI. You'd have to bring the magnetic reluctor signal out of the HEI distributor, feed it to the MSD module, and then send the coil trigger from the MSD back under the cap to the ignition coil. As I recall, MSD shows how to connect it in their instructions for the 6A module. Another possibility is to use the short cap for HEI (assuming the short inline six HEI cap fits the V6 HEI distributor - probably does) and locate the coil outside the distributor. Then your distributor would only provide the magnetic signal - differential voltage on two wires - and the spark distribution from the coil to the spark plugs.

On second thought, only maybe. The oddfire V6 HEI has a dual-trigger setup with only 3 lobes on the reluctor wheel. I'm not sure how you would use the trigger signal from the two sense coils ... maybe they are connected in series for the HEI module, and then you'd still have a single differential voltage to the MSD module.

Hope this is clear ... on reading back it may be hard to follow.

Ok, I did a little snooping on the RockAuto site, and the 231 HEI module is the same as the 250 Chevy module. So you should be able to trigger the MSD from the paired reluctors on the 231 odd-fire HEI

I ran HEI for a while, then I switched to Pertronix and MSD. If I were to do it again, I'd do the Pertronix and MSD without a doubt.

I have run both HEI (still running it on Jeep) and Pertronix. I put the Pertronix and MSD on the Race Jeep 225. It had a Mallory dual point when I got the motor. It ran good. Then I put the upgraded ignition on and it ran so good I over revved it and blew up the motor. (Ever seen camshaft on the ground?)
Point is it does make a huge difference. I like HEI on the trail rig because parts are readily available everywhere if needed. I carry an Extra module and tools to change it. Along with the proper compound.
If going strictly performance or you don't want to grind the intake then Pertronix IF you have a Delco distributor if not just go HEI.

MSD makes a unit specifically for Odd Fire V6's, Model # 6246. Mega Squirt has schematics for wiring with an HEI, I believe MSD does also. HTH Good luck!
