accelerator cable problem

hello again!
it's been a long time since i've posted about my '75.
think the last time was when i installed electronic ignition.

my problem now
is that my engine won't rev down when i let off the pedal
the linkage at the carb is fine
and the cable seems to be sticking or hanging up in the accelerator cable tubing

my 75 cj5 has the 258
which new cable should i buy?
and is there a video that explains how to replace this cable?

Does it have dashpot at the carb end, to make the throttle shut slowly for the last fraction? Could that be hung up or jammed?

 

Unless your cable has rusted inside the TC or something on your carb.

 

removed the cable
figured out the plastic tabs that hold the cable in the firewall
pinch them in and the cable removes easily

it is something inside the cable that is hanging up
so, i ordered another 28" cable

Sometimes simply removing the cable, spraying brake cleaner down the housing a bunch, then re-lubing will solve this problem. I have to do this to mine about every 2 years as crud accumulates inside (dust, etc.).

 

Cleaning may help, but these cables will wear through and fray with time. The cable wires stick out and hang the wire in the sheath.

They are a common service part. I would just replace it with new.

 

If it was a toyota you could join a class action suit and sue for millions of dollars...

I agree if it is worn or damaged replacement is indicated. If it's just sticky because of debris (old lube, dust/dirt, etc.) then it could be cleaned. If it works smoothly afterward then should be no problem. If not, then definitely replace it. If I replaced mine every time mine it got sticky I would have needlessly replaced them many times.
