Check clutch adjustment and transmission fluid level/condition to start. Also make sure the shifter boot isn't binding against the body and engine/transmission mounts are in good condition. Keep in mind if you have a T-86 (stock in that year,3 speed) first gear is not synchronized so you need to be almost stopped to shift down into first gear.

2nd gear should be fully synchronized. Check clutch adjustment as posted above, but a trans rebuild or replacement may be in your future...

You might want to take a look inside there sooner than later. Good luck.

You didn't say where you are, if it's as cold there as it is here, it could be part of your problem.
My Commando wasn't too happy about shifting at -11 this morning.
Please put a location in your signiture, it just helps later responses.

There's a reason or two why Willys only used the T86 for two years...

Willys didn't use the T86. Kaiser did.

And Kaiser probably switched to the T-14 to modernize to an all-synchromesh transmission, I would guess. The T-14 isn't that great either, but a non-synchro first gear transmission was outdated by 1966. The fully synchromesh T-14 (I6) and T-15 (V8) became the standard transmissions for the Wagons and J-trucks in 1967, and the 225 CJ came along when, in 1968? Jeep was basically using commodity transmissions sourced from Borg-Warner and GM, and once the T-14 was available, it would make sense to upgrade the CJ to a full-synchro transmission. Apparently it did not make economic sense to upgrade the F134 Jeeps, since they got the T-90 through 1971.

I would guess that Jeep wanted to use an upgraded transmission from the T-90 with its new V6 offering in 1965, and the T-14 wasn't ready yet. So they used the T-86, which is just a warmed-over T-90.
