I have a 1970 CJ5, that started as a slight rebuild, due to "might as well since I am there", now it is a frame off build. I am putting in a 1974 Dana 30 that currently has drum brakes. I plan to install a power booster, swing pedals from a yj and disc brakes. I don't have much time right now to go to a salvage yard so I am looking to find something that is all together that I can put on my front axle. what do you all think of this kit? supposedly you can install it onto the drum spindles and don't have to grind the knuckles. Opinions? Anyone used one of these kits?

I am still fairly new to all the CJ stuff but thanks to this site I am learning a lot.
    Thanks!

You might call R&P and ask them what they can sell you. http://rp4wd.com/?page_id=41

The usual approach for an open knuckle 30 is to find a disk-equipped Dana 30 CJ donor ('77 or newer) and switch over the parts from the knuckles out. Possibly you could find a donor at car-part.com and the yard will pull the parts for you.

Really, with a power booster, the 11" drum brakes should be more than adequate. The only advantage to disks will be a longer service interval, and self-wiping (better when wet). If you don't want the drums, the left-over parts will have value, so don't throw them out.

Thanks timgr. I will check out R&P and see what they have as well. I have been looking for a CJ with a disc D30. I have not had much luck lately finding one for sale and with work the way it is, it has been very hard to get out to some of the more rural salvage yards, so I am exploring my options.

R&P normally stocks the kits and will help you if there are issues. Sometimes that is not the case with e-bay sellers (although some are very helpful).
