I've got a mutt of a rig and I love it, but I need some of this site's collective wisdom to help me figure out what tranny/Xfer case models I have.

I bought a 51 3A that came with some 2A body parts. From what I know, there are no 2A drivetrain parts.

The casting numbers on the tranny are as follows:
    - on the main case, T90A-1 in large print and 69-11-7 in small print nearby.
    - on the shifter base, T90C 148D

So is this a T90A-1 or a T90C with an A body (which my research leads me to think is a possibility)? I need to do a rebuild and want to order the right kit.

The transfer case has no large casting numbers at all, which surprises me. Since it is a Dana 18 )I know that much) with a PTO and a Warn overdrive unit, I expected to see a C 15-18-XX type of casting number. But the intermediate shaft measures 1 1/4", not 1 1/8" as I would have expected from a Xfer case from this year 3A.

Are these clues telling you that it's a later model T90C coupled to a later Dana 18? Or ...?

I'm doing my level best to research this thing but I just can't find anything precise to help me in my rebuild efforts.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds like a later model 18 transfer case. Do not go by the numbers on the T-90 shifter top as they are too easily swapped around. What engine do you have? May shed some light on the transmission. Pics are also helpful ;)
Host them on Photobucket, Flickr, etc and then link them here to your post.

You need to pull the top of the tranny and count the teeth on the input gear. T90C has 16 tooth - T90A is 18 tooth.

I'll post pics, but the engine is a swapped in Ford V8 260.

    Thanks for the feedback, folks.

That is the most positive way but also a bit of work, especially if the floor has been modified during the swap. Couldn't you also just jack up the rear, put in first gear, mark position on the transfercase brake drum, and turn the motor over 2.8 revolutions by hand. If the Tcase is at one rev, it is a T90A. If it's less than one turn at the Tcase, T90C.

I think that's what I'll do. I've been looking for the other casting numbers (on the top edge of the driver's side flange on the Dana 18 or the top right rear corner on the top of T90A), but they're ground smooth (noticeably so compared to the rougher casting surface of the cases around the area where the numbers should be). Not sure what the original owner was thinking in doing so, but I'm inclined to think this is a 3B or CJ5 case.

I'll jack up the back end and count revolutions to see if the tranny is a T90A or C.

    Thanks for the help, guys.

I pulled the cover off my T90 and counted teeth. Looks like it's a T90A through and through. There was a bit of surface rust on the main gear, so I'm going to pull it out, pull it apart, clean it up, refresh it, and slap it back in. I've got the Crown T90MASKIT rebuild kit on its way.

Thanks again, folks. The guidance is appreciated.
