My storage facility closed last weekend so I had to move my Jeep. (My buddy's wife told him to get all the crap out of the yard since their homeowner's insurance was being cancelled- something about sharp edges and falling hazards... whatever.)

I went to pick it up and it had no brakes. I rolled around under it and saw no sign of leakage on the wheels or master cylinder. No big deal. With 235's and 4.88's and being a man, I don't need brakes to drive two miles.

When I got home, after I stopped shaking, I tried to remove the master cylinder cap. Let me rephrase that. I tried to remove the entire cap, but only the hexagonal part came off. In the socket. I laughed, drank a beer and whipped out the old air hammer. The remainder of the cap did not budge. Hmmm...

I am able to find a new cap but it always has a master cylinder attached. Does anyone know where I can find a cap?

Now, before I find three caps in my mailbox for nothing more than good tidings, (thanks again for the heater button, WALT), I need to figure out where all the juice went. Before I parked it, I topped off the master cylinder. I see no signs of leakage, but I haven't pulled the wheels off yet. That is a lot of liquid to disappear.

I am going to have to remove the master to get the rest of the cap off, so I will have to bleed the (insert foul language here) regardless. I guess I am just trying to talk myself into plunking down fifty of my not so hard earned dollars and installing a new one.

At least you guys understand and won't ask in a delightfully feminine voice , "Why don't you just buy a new Wrangler?" To which I reply, "Because you're stupid" and eat fast food for the rest of the week.

Single guys may not get that last one.

To make a long story even longer, any ideas on sourcing a cap? And where did the juice go?

    Eddie

    Heater Button?

    I sent a Heater Button?

Damn, my mind is going :(

    Anyhoo-

If it were me I'd replace the whole master cylinder- they're not that pricey & if it was rusty enough to do that to the cap it's probably trashed in the bore.

Pull the mc Pushrod dust book back and check there first for residue. If not then time to pull the wheels if the hoses are all ok. If it is the mc might be time to install an upgraded unit. I just installed R&P's dual conversion about 3 weeks ago on the '59-5 and it was a simple install. The hardest part was modifying the metal lines. I had to run some new ones due to other issues unrelated to the conversion.

If you just need a cap I may have one you could have.

Aww... shi.t. Sorry Walt. I knew it was you that kindly sent me that piece. I knew it was Georgia and the signpost. I screwed up the name. Please find it in your heart to forgive me.

How simple and how much did it cost? I have a bender and a flaring tool... If I am buying a new master anyway.

"My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it. "

EDIT- Nevermind. Just looked it up $240. Yikes.

This is why I love DOT #5 fluid. No corrosion issues, even after twenty years in the system.

I too bought that R&P dual mc kit for my 59 CJ5 but I've been too lazy to install it yet, mostly because i would have to make new lines. it looks like a great kit and much safer, but i did just a couple months ago put in a new single reservoir mc. I have been considering installing that dual mc in my latest toy, a 1948 CJ2A.

Which MC cap do you need? I think I still have 5 or 6 of them around if I didn't take them to the scrap already.

Chuck, I am not sure what the diference in caps is. I looks to be the stock single reservoir master from 1966.

5 or 6 lying around?! Good grief, you're the guy with an engine block lying in the front yard - and the guy I want to be, and the guy my wife would divorce. Speaking of my wife leaving me, this reminds me of when I said, "sure honey, take the jeep to work today." Followed by a frantic phone call describing how the brakes failed 100% and she blew through a stop-sign (as some of you may remember).

Ended up being a slow leak from a rear cylinder. Totally hidden until I got the wheel off. And I agree, the dual MC is a bit pricey. I did a rebuild MC and new slave cylinders. Perfecto! Two birds with one stone; the brakes are fixed and the wifey won't drive my Jeep anymore.

I added some fluid through the hole in the lid and the brakes pumped right up and felt fine. The master did not need a lot of juice, two ounces or so. All I need now is a new cap. Any sources?

Sorry - didn't make it to the shop (or at least not that far). Got any way to post a pic? Is it the screw in type or the cover with the clamp that moves over the side?

No - the 3 spare engines are on stands in the shop. Hope to move them to an out building soon to free up room in the shop.
