so as some of you know I have a 1971 CJ 5 with a 240 D Mercedes diesel motor in it and a turbo 350 warn overdrive combo. I'm looking for a synchronized close ratio 4 or 5 speed I can swap in. automatic sucks too much power of the engine.

I need to stick with the chevy 90 degree pattern as the adapter from the diesel fits this.

Also ill need to source pedal assemblies etc etc

this is a great site for info about possible transmission swaps. My guess would be a t-18 without granny might work?

I would think the SM420 or SM465 would be better for use with that motor. Of course if you have room for a T350 then you have room for a AX5 which even though it is not the strongest transmission, they are really cheap, really easy to find and the gears would be just about perfect. Plus it has OD built in already.

If you want a heavy duty trans that's close ratio I'd consider the Ford T-19. First gear is synchronized and can be had in 4.02-1, 5-1, and 6.32-1 first gear ratio's. these can be converted to bolt to a GM bellhousing pretty easy.
I would not use an AX-5. They are marginal behind the stock 4 cylinder. An AX-15 on the other hand might be a possibility. Much stronger transmission.
