air cleaner

Right now I'm running a standard edelbrock "open sides" air cleaner with kn filter. It looks good, and I'm sure it performs well on street apps, but I'm concerned that the filter will be overly exposed to water and mud. Recomendations??

 

K&N makes a nylon "pre-filter" that goes around the outside of the air filter. Common to see on sand rails and atv's to shed sand and mud. They do pretty well at shedding water as well.

I use a plain paper air filter with a foam wrap. This is what Jeep supplied from about 1971 on. Several companies make the foam wrap - check Summit Racing.

The K&N filters may be ok for street cars, but I've seem empirical evidence that they don't filter very well. Not good for dusty environments, IMO.

Paper plus foam is a good combination. The paper filter out the tiny particles, and the foam catches the visible dust. The foam can be washed, oiled and reused.

 

The factory air cleaner setup is the best at protecting from water and mud. Like Tim says, paper element with the foam wrap. Both still available new.

Hi-flow intakes are just a gimmick in this application.
