I finished rebuilding my Ramsey Winch and the cable that was on it was only rated at 1900. I would like to run a synthetic cable vs metal has anyone done this? I've used synthetic on other winches just not a PTO winch.

    Thanks
    Jon

I've been toying with the same idea and asked around about it. Basically I was told to run a non-roller style fair lead and it needs to be absolutely smooth. Which is why many use an aluminum or delrin Hawse fair lead. The concern with running a roller is the flexibility of the synthetic rope is such that it could get pinched between the rollers where they overlap or get damaged in the frame. If you choose to run a roller fair lead I'd recommend replacing the rollers with new, preferably something a little more forgiving like the aluminum or Delrin I mentioned. Any burrs at all can damage the very expensive rope.
I decided against it because if cost and I sometimes have to run my cable over rocks, through brush, etc. and steel cable holds up better under those conditions.

i'm almost ready to purchase the am-steel synthetic rope to replace the wire on my belleview winch. i will be running a hawse fairlead or modify a roller setup. i am in the same boat as nick as i use it a lot on the rocks and worry about chaffing the rope. i like the safety portion of the rope vs. wire though and the weight factor.

I didn't think of the roller set-up my jeep doesn't have a roller setup. It has a guide area made out of angle iron which was painted and mounted with the winch. I do like the safety of synthetic vs cable but cable will last longer with my set-up.

    Thanks Jon
