I'm thinking or buying a 1968 v6 cj5. Any trans swap ideas? I'm new with the v6 options and am looking for ideas. 4 or 5 speed or auto. Any ideas will be helpful.

You will still be working with an 81" wheelbase which pretty much eliminates both auto's and 5 speeds if you still want a rear drive shaft. Personally, it would be a SM 465-with an overdrive.

As stated above, a granny gear 4 speed with a Warn OD is the holy grail for a CJ5.
Do a search on here and you'll find lots of info about T18, SM420, & SM465 swaps.
Its possible to install a Turbo 350 auto trans, but its a very tight fit.

A TH-400 can fit as well. I've seen it. Ask member Daryl on here. He did this to his wife's 3b successfully and I think is running 33" tires with no issues. IMHO a TH-350 would be a good choice for better driveline angles but more expensive due to the adapter needed.
Personally I prefer the T-18 as it's pretty simple to convert. The SM-465 is a great transmission but huge and requires machining of the bellhousing. The SM-420 has the lowest first gear but hasn't been produced since 1967 and there are 3 versions I'm aware of. This can make getting hard parts very difficult. They tend to be noisier as well as the helix on the gears is much shallower than the other transmissions. Think Muncie "Rock crusher" car 4 speeds that got their name because they sound like a rock crusher driving down the road.

My dream combo is the 225 matched to a sm420, d18, with overdrive......

I'm personally running the 225 T90 and D18 with OD

    I had a T18 behind the V6 in the '71, loved it!

Tumbleweed also had a flattie with a TH400, IIRC.

The Turbo 350 fits better/ is shorter than the factory T18 4-speed setup.

Looked at a 68 v6 today, no good. Any leades around central NJ would be a big help. I'll travel about 300 miles.
