only at the axle to do a long distance drive.
i have no hubs so i think this would help , and my question is
if i tie down the front of the driveshaft to the frame will this work?
someone told me that the driveshaft only removed at the axle still turns????????
    can i do this?

i hope you understand what my question is

if it was me . I would remove the whole drive shaft. just because . the rear output and front input are connected by a input shaft bushing . so my thinking .it might want to turn just being tied up. oops are we talking about a D18

Were it me, I'd either keep it all the way in or take it all the way out. I see no reason to remove it unless you are flat towing it and don't have locking hubs in the front.

Personally, were I driving the trip, I'd just leave it in and not mess with it.

I'd just pull the whole thing.

Or remove the drive flanges, make a cover of some sort to keep the dust out of the bearings, replace the flanges when you get to where you are going.

Or just install locking hubs and don't look back.

I would just shift it into 2WD and drive it. Jeeps were delivered from the factory for decades without locking hubs. Hubs are very much in the "nice to have, but not essential" category.

To answer your original question Wuze, you can remove it from the front diff and tie it up. However, it would be much safer to remove it completely.
