I have been searching for another jeep project. When looking at CJ2A's/3A's where can I expect to find the vehicle ID plate? Is there one on the firewall like on my CJ5? Is there any other less obvious place to look for an ID number on these? Thanks all. Tony L.

There should be a plate on the firewall with the VIN stamped on it.

Yep, firewall. The 3B tag is on the upper right (passenger side), the 2A, 3A on the upper left IIRC. The 2A and 3A's will also have a second tag with the body number that is typically close but not the same as the SN. Not sure of the 2A/3A frame stamps, but the 3B's should have the last portion of the SN stamped on top of the right side frame rail just ahead of the spring hanger. If you find a GPW/MB, the SN tag is on the glove box door (really dumb location as doors get lost , switched, etc, but guess when the life expectancy was only 3 months, it didn't make much difference) and frame stamp on top left frame rail ahead of front axle.

Thanks alot. What do people do when they change their tubs to fiberglass or new metal? Do they move the old tags over? I wonder if most state DMV's accept that and particularly does NYS accept that as legal. I just do not want to get stuck with something that my state will consider illegal. Thanks again. I think contacting your DMV to find out what inspection is required for a body change is a good idea. It varies from state to state on who inspects or does not require inspection. Sometimes you are issued a VIN plate reassigning the same number to go along with the plate you transfer. Better to know up front than to get stuck.

My bad, after posting above I went and looked at the 2A/3A's and the tags on all of them are on the upper left firewall. And I just switched the tag to the glass tub on my 3B. The SN is still stamped in the frame if there was ever a question.

Fwiw my buddies '47 2a had the vin tag on the upper right (passenger side) firewall on the engine compartment side and was very obviously factory. I've seen others there as well on 2a's.
    don't know on 3a's.

Thanks all, I appreciate all the replys. NYS DMV is not clear cut, much beaurocracy and not very comforting, usually NYS DMV is a big pain to deal with at any level. I do not think I would want to tangle them, unless someone who is a part of this forum has had some direct experiance and wisdom to share on this topic. Forms exist for applying but it does not look easy at all. Thanks again all of you. Tony L.

In CO, it works like this - if you combine 2 VIN tagged vehicles (they need to be more than 20 years old), you need the paper work on them and have to use the info for the 'newest' of the 2. You get an inspection from the CO state patrol and they decide if they want to 'assign' a VIN or use the one you have docs on (depends on trooper, but most are cool about just using the newest VIN since you have paper work on both). Getting the docs on an old, abandoned title can be an issue though.

If it's a 'new tub' - same process with the receipt for the 'new tub' replacing the paper VIN. You get to keep the old VIN 90% of the time and just move on from there.

FWIW - The last several times I have had the same guy check things. He only shows up to BS with me on the old Willys and sign the form, doesn't even look anymore. I really believe it depends on who you get, and I hear that from almost everyone who I know that deals with DMV type folks. There have been times where I didn't get things done the way it was before, and just went back a different day and the other person just put it through without a second look.

Remember - we are dealing with very old vehicles, and they are not 'high dollar' items like a Shelby. Talk to a cop or if you know an auto dealer type person, talk to them. They normally know the in's and out's of things.

No, it is not. Only early 2As have the VIN in two places, the firewall tag, and one of the three data plates on the dash. The rest have it only on the firewall VIN tag. 2As and 3As have them in the upper corner of the passenger side firewall.

I just realized I was wrong with this info. 2As do have a frame tag. It is located on the drivers side front by the bumper. Most are usually missing because the frame has been repaired there. That's why I always forget about it.

    x2!

The state VIN inspector is coming out to my place on Monday to do the inspection on the '45 GPW frame and body I have. I started working with him before I bought either one. Told him what I was doing, gave him serial numbers to run and got his verbal approval along the way. I'm hoping Monday's visit will be trouble free.
