anyone tried to use the new badlands 5,000 lb winch sold thru Harbor Frieght? a friend got one and it is the size of an ATV winch i was just curious if it fits the bill for winching a CJ-5 out of spots. any input would be fine. Thanks

Generally, electric winches are easy to burn up. Especially "off-brand" cheapos. Especially if undersized.

A PTO winch is far the best, IMHO, but if you go electric I think you'd want a true #8000 or better.

Rule of thumb is 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle loaded minimum. You get what you pay for with winches.

What you can get by with depends on how you plan to use the Jeep. If you are always out with others that can winch you out go cheap-as in save your money and forget the cheap winch. Otherwise-go Warn or Ramsey. I think Warn has the best customer service-hands down. Certainly the best repair parts service. Personal choice, but have prefered electric over PTO from the very first winch I purchased, a Belleview 6000 (became Warn) in 1968-and it still works perfect. A lot of extra mechanicals on a PTO and if you have Saginaw steering it can get to be a real engineering puzzle.

Don't screw yourself with a POS.

Save money, post wanted ads, get a quality winch.

How well a winch lasts depends a lot on how well you use it. I've been using a ramsey 5000 lb for many years and it works great. Most people will tell you that 5000 lb is not enough but I've found it to be fine for winching out the Jeep. I have stalled it out hooking on to full size trucks.

The old rule of thumb is 1 1/2 times the vehicle wt. The advertised wt of an early is around 2,665 lb but I think that's a bit low. Plus, you should account for the load also. Say your rig is 3500 lbs fully loaded: 3500 lbs x 1.5 = 5250 lb winch.

I would say a 6000 lb winch would be about perfect.

If you go with a cheap off brand, carry a good come-a-long as backup. And learn how to use your hi-lift as a winch also.
