I've got the head being done by a great machine shop about an hour from here. The exhaust valves are going to be lapped in place by none other than myself. Fortunately, my father is a competent machinist by trade, and a tool designer. So he'll help with the lower end.

I'll try to get pictures of the warn lobe, however it's easiest to see it in action, not by still picture. Also, I ordered electronic ignition/distributor from Walcks. I'm just not going to deal with points anymore.

Here's an interesting picture... looks like the head has been off before, and a repair done to the block. I'm going to post this in a separate thread as well.

That #2 cylinder is sooty, a sign of misfiring, and I wonder if that corresponds to the worn distributer lobe?

The electronic distributors need to see a full 12 + volts. A slightly discharged battery will give you problem.

"I too have heard they can burn up."

I'd suggest you carry a spare, and/or the old points. Electronics can die and leave you stranded in a way that mechanical ignition doesn't.

So just to let everyone know, I've got the engine all back together, lots of new parts, cleaned parts, etc. and she runs like a top! I think the original culprit was the worn lobe on the distributor cam. However, in the process, everything else has gotten cleaned or replaced. Needless to say, I have an engine that will go for many more miles!

Thank you all for the help, advice, and input!
