I vaguely remember someone on here talking about a possible catastrophic result from leaving out the "pill" which goes between the shift rails but I can't remember enough detail to find the original thread. Can someone please help my feeble memory before I shoot myself in the foot?

2wd low can break stuff if you are not careful (allot of torque), also sometimes the transfer case can pop out of gear.

I love my 2 low......I do most of my wheeling in 2 low, until it get really cranky. I never had any issues of it jumping out of gear.

Don't really like 2 wheel low, but I've used it once or twice.

You shouldn't have any real issues as long as everything is in working order, just keep in mind it's extra torquey.

I did the conversion and left the pill out so I could get true twin stick operation. Love it!!!!!!!!

No issues here either leaving it out and it's been out of the 3B cases for 25 to 30 years. I can't see what difference in rear axle torque it would really make unless you never have wheel spin.

With the pill in, you cant get the transfer case in a Hi-Lo situation were one output shaft is in low range and the other axle is in high range. If the interlock pill is removed, you can shift into a Hi-Lo if you are not paying attention. If this happens, bad things can happen because your rear axle will be turning in low range and your front axle will be in high range (or the other way around, depending on the postiion of the sticks).

The real benifit is you can be in rear low only or you can shift the rear into neutral and put the front in either high or low and do what is called a front dig. If you use cutting brakes (2 rear parking brakes, one on each rear wheel you can use independantly), and do a front dig, it turns very sharply.

Those that use them love them but you have to be careful.

This doesn't work with the dana 18......only with the dana 300, not sure about the dana 20 but don't think you can do front digs with the dana 20 either

    Dana 18 is 2 hi 2 low 4 hi 4 low or n

A Dana 20 will allow you to control each axle independent of the other if you remove the detent pill. I had mine set up this way. Loved it.

Think you're thinking of the 300? Only one (other than atlas) that I know can dig.

The Dana 20 can be set up that way too.

Dana 18 cannot get front and rear in different ranges period.
Dana 20 and 300 can if the interlock pill has been removed on a stock transfer case. With some shift rail mods you can leave the interlock pills in and get front only high and low range, rear only hi and low range, front an rear low and high range, but not rear low and front hi, and vice verse.
Done it on a bunch of 300's. lots of writeups on the net on the 300. Recently prototyped a setup on a 20 and it worked awesome with a twin stick conversion. Will not work on a single stick setup.

Oh. Never mind me then. I always thought the D18 would do the same as the D20 with the pills removed. I guess you can put that in the back of your mind in case you ever want to use a later Dana transfercase. Learned a little something new.....

2wd low range is especially useful when you have front and rear lockers, makes it a lot easier to steer on trails where you don't need the 4wd.
