I hope that this question hasn't been asked a million time on here and my searching skills are just pathetic, but I didn't see this particular question before. It appears that my D18 transfer case is leaking (fairly badly) at the back of the intermediate shaft. Does this mean that I have a case problem or will one of Herm's intermediate shaft kits have me up the trail in no time?

Had the same problem.....I purchased about $50 in parts to fix the isssue. Ordered a new yoke as mine had a worn area on the shaft (check that). Ordered the National Seal # 473229 from a local vendor. It has a double seal and much better than OEM spec. Finally covered the shaft splines with flexible permatex before installing.

    Winner - No leaks!

Thanks for the info, but I have already been down that trail with the output shaft. This time it is the intermediate shaft that is leaking.

The Novak intermediate shaft uses "O" rings. Might try that. I haven't tried it yet, but I do have their full rebuild kit. Really good quality BTW.

Even with the good Novak shaft I very lightly coat the bore on the front side of the transfer case and the shaft on the backside just before driving the shaft the last little bit. This really helps. Also check the bores in your case and make sure they aren't damaged or cracked.
