Fuel sending unit

I'm looking to replace the sending unit in my 1970 CJ5 w/V-6. The tank is under the drivers seat. All the units I find list 1955 to 1967, and some say 4cyl only. Will they work on mine, it is the same tank? Does the 67 and older have two lines coming from the tank (one 1/4" return and one 5/16" line)?

 

Did you ever find a correct sending unit? We also have a 70 CJ5 V6 and just pulled our gas tank for cleaning and our sending unit/fuel pick up is toast. Anyone know where to find this correct part? Thanks

 

I just ordered a 4 cyl sender. I have a 70 V6 but the tank in mine has been replaced with a plastic tank. it does not have any provision for a vent line for the emisions system. the sender in it is a round 6 hole 12V sender. that appears to be the same one Krage sells for the early 60s 4 cyl CJ3 and CJ5. I will let you know when I get it.

 

I think I found one at Kaiser-Willys. Ill call them tommorrow and confirm its correct as original.

be careful, i was told that they did not make them anymore, i got one from one of the guys here. does yours have the screws or the locking type sending unit to hold it in. mine has the little locking tabs and i think the one you are looking at has the screws to hold it in. it will not work without some mods (so i was told)

man when i was looking they told me they dont make them anymore and i would have to find someone with a used on or from a salvage yard. wonder if there is someone maiking them again

 

Looks like they do make a sending unit with the twist on lock instead of the screw type for a 70 CJ but it is for the 15gal rear tank. Will this fit on the under seat 10gal tank with the twist on lock if I bend the float rod???????

I ordered the one two down from that one (5357373k) because it had the V6 return line inlet on it. Not sure if it will work but it looks the same as what I took out and hopefully I can modify the float arm from a 15gal to a 10 gal.

 

I have a 64 Tux with the 225 Buick Special.What sending unit should I buy?also how do you go about cleaning the gas tank.

 

It depends on which tank you have. Is it under the seat,does the sending unit mount with screws or a twist and lock,does it have a return vent,and does the fuel pick up line come in from the top or bottom?

 

I was contemplating buyng a new sending unit myself. BUT before I did I thought I could test mine to see if it is working properly. Can anyone give the voltage readings that I should see?

I have a 68 with the under the seat gas tank.

Both are good reads for understanding these gauges. Also, is stuff has been swapped in, the gauge and sender may work in opposite directions. You can bend the the float arm backwards.

Somewhere is information on using a variable resistor to measure the sender levels, and adding something inline to adjust??? I really don't know how/why this was done

 

Thanks for the cleaning tip.I need to be getting out the door fast but I do have the under seat tank.I'll have to take a good look tonight.My 225 is a one barrel!I dont know if the carb has a return line.It's the original rochester (I think it's original).I say original because the Tux and the Buick are both 1964.I think this was done at the dealership.(Tux 8422 10125 made in Dec 64 titled as a 65-Buick special stamped KH=64)

 

My tank has the sending unit mounted on top with srews.The tank has no return vent and has a drain plug.
