Hello, My son has owned jeeps for quite a while and while he was living at home worked on the quite a bit. I have always been a classic truck guy so owning a jeep is new to me. I just purchased a 1971 Jeep CJ that I plan to refurbish. Someone transplanted at 283 V8 into it. It has a T-14A 3 speed and a Dana 20 transfer case. My problem is that the front bearing retainer is broken on the transmission. Part of it is up in the pressure plate & clutch area. I have looked everywhere online but have had no luck finding a replacement front bearing retainer. Does anyone know if this is an available part? If not could the existing retainer be welded then turned back down by a machinist? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

It may not be available new. You might try R&P at 503-557-8911, Herm Tilford at Hermtheoverdriveguy.com, or Partsmike. There is a sticky thread at the top of this section called Where to Find Parts that has vendors listed. You might also put an ad in the classifieds section. Are you sure it has a 20 transfercase? '71 should be an 18 transfercase as the 20 wasn't used in CJ's until 1972 when the centered rear axle was used and AMC I-6 engines were used. You should have a Buick V-6. The front bearing retainers are different between the I-6 and V-6 versions.

Nick, Thanks for the information! The serial number shows that it had a v6 originally. Somewhere in it's life the rear end was replaced with a centered rear axle and the dana 20 transfer case. I know the transfer case is the 20 from looking at it and the casting numbers, C18-15-24-6 the transmission is the T-14A, casting numbers 13-02-065. I have no idea what the previous owner did on the transplant with the v8 so I suppose I had better pull it to see exactly which retainer is being used. I did not know there was two different ones. This thing is going to be a whole new learning experience, I have had only late 40's and early 50's GMC trucks before this. I am still learning my way around this forum, I will take a look at that sticky.
    Thanks!

Check out the knowledge base at Novak. It will give you a big insight into the possibilities of what they may have done to fit things, and how to fix it.
