I found a pretty nice 1965 CJ-5a Tuxedo Park not too far from here. Looks like new. Seller gives the mileage as around 50,000. The jeep was used as a towed vehicle behind a motor home, on a dolly.

    Scenario #1

So, if the transfer case was in neutral, and the transmission was in 3rd gear while the jeep was being towed, (assumption is that the rear drive line was not removed) why would it accumulate mileage on the odometer? Doesn't the transmission have to turn for the odo to register miles? Wouldn't the internal parts of the transmission be stationary, as while it's in gear it's attached to a stationary engine?

    Scenario #2....

The transfer case was in gear, and the transmission was in neutral while it was being towed, rear wheels on the ground, fronts on the dolly. That would explain the mileage accumulation.

Would towing as in #2 cause other potential problems in the transmission, since part of it is continually turning while the jeep was being towed on the dolly?

    Thanks..

The speedometer drive is on the rear output of the transfer case, not on the transmission.
Yes, #2 would be seriously problematic to the transmission.

Much discussion here in past posts on the towing topic. Try search?

More of a transmission question than a towing question. With the speedo drive on the output of the transfer case the question is answered...

"search" is not the answer to everything....

    Thanks Nick,

So based on the mileage accumulation alone there is no way to know how it was set up while being towed....other than the drive line was intact...

How much of the Tux parts does it still have? Looks like the front bumper might still be the original even with the winch. These came with the column shift but could also have had the cane (floor) transmission installed.

What kind of winch is that? Looks like it fits the tux bumper pretty well.

It is a nice looking Jeep. Most of the Tux parts are there including column shift and license plate light. Price seems high, but the trailer's ready and I don't have a darn thing on my calendar today. :driving:

If that is the original paint and no rust, IMO, $6800 isn't at all a bad price.

Speedometer cable easily disconnected at transfer case while towing.
Not everyone does, but some do.
