So I found a 1972 Wagoneer in the wrecking yard. I did some hasty research and pulled all the brakes. They are the right size (11") and the axles looked Dana to me.
Now I am wondering if I should head back and grab the steering gear. The box looked too BIG to me. Is it the Saginaw 4bolt, casting #76 that I'm looking for for my eventual Sag power steer conversion? If yes, should I grab all the rods and whatnot from the steering column to the axle?
    Thanks

ALSO, is there any good reason for memto grab that 44 front axle? I'm not sure i'll ever "need" a beefier front end but...
I have a '67 CJ5 and I think the waggy axle is too wide anyway?

If the box looks and mounts like this:
then its what you want. The box is about 4x the size of a Ross box.
The Wagoneer 44 is to wide but people out board springs and or narrow them down. Thats totally up to you. A dana 30 front is a good mod for a normal street/trail jeep though.

Thanks I'll go take a harder look.
Are the tie rods worth having to save some cash? They are too wide if the axle is but I could narrow them. Do the ends fit my steering knuckles?

The front may be a closed knuckle 44, if so you don't really want to mess with it as it isn't much of an upgrade. If it is closed knuckle, the tie rod ends may be the same or may not, depends on the vintage. If open knuckle, the tie rod ends are too big.
I'd definitely grab the steering gear if in good shape along with the hoses.

A '72 will have a closed knuckle 30. Even less of an upgrade.

    Otherwise, what Nick wrote.

I just bought a 76 waggy to pull the axles from for the boys Scout... It's the right box on it as I saw it and thought 'bonus'...

Haven't found out if the motor is a 360 or 401, but it's got the 4 bbl spread bore intake so might work as a power plant too.

AMC motors have the displacement cast into the side of the block in large fonts!

    the box will work
    the box mount won't
the tie rods will be too long/wide for a CJ application.
I would ditch the rag joint coupler as well.
the pitman arm could have a slight drop too it.

Ya - but it was dark, snowy, cold as a witches... and I'm old...

Damn near broke a rib getting under the springs (low tires) so I could see 360 cast into the block.

Poor waggy. Chopped up for spare parts. I hope this was a rusty, decrepit one.

I've heard tell the later blocks can have 5.9 cast into them also.

And yes, an FSJ box is HUGE compared to a baby Jeep box.

Actually - It looks to be in pretty good shape - but missing alot of 'things'. I am the second one who is taking parts off of it and will try to put out for folks the good stuff left on it. I have not dug into it deep yet, but its from AZ (title is AZ) and the doors and such look real good from the outside... I only really dug at the axles as that was what I thought I was mainly getting for $300.

Oh - it is missing the tailgate, so weather is going to get into it (if it hasn't already).

Supposedly this only happened in the last year, 1991.

AFAIK the CJ and Wagoneer/J-10 gears are the same overall size. The J20 gear is bigger. They are still bolt-in replacements for each other.

For your peace of mind. The Waggy in the wreckers is very wet and rusty. It's a good parts rig for sure. I like old Wagoneers and feel no pain in pulling parts from this one! ;)

    Mcruff,

Very clean adaptation. That looks like a fabricated pitman arm? Are no OEM or aftermarket arms suitable for these instalations?

    Who built that pitman arm?

    Thanks

Would that Wagoneer have the closed knuckle Dana with right hand steering knuckle that has the 2 tie rod holes in it? Don't those knuckles also fit the Dana 27? If so, then that would be good to have for a saginaw conversion

Would this work with my dauntless? It's $50 and I'm thinking of getting it.

Looks awful rusty from the pic. Good for a core if cheap enough. I won't buy any power steering gear if it has sat with lines off for any length of time unless virtually free then only to use as a core. The last 4 I pulled apart to reseal were too rusty to do anything with.

Definitely not worth $50 IMHO. I think a reman box from O'Reilly's is around $115.
