I'm looking to replace the starter on my 67 cj5 with a 225 v-6. Napa told me all they could get was a rebuild kit for the existing one. To be honest I'd like to find something better than the 1967 technology, but then again it's has worked for 43 years possibly. Any good ideas? Thanks :v6:

Part number for a remanufactured starter at Autozone
    Part Number:
    DL3208 $55 with core.

    Oreilly's list 4 starters.
    Part Number: 03-0115 $54.99
    Part Number: 03-0236M
    Part Number: 336-1860
    Part Number: 336-1860A

If they told you all they could get was a kit they were full of crap. The Buick motor basically uses a standard GM starter.

The short answer is yes. They use the larger case GM starter like the big blocks and inline six.

The drive end housing is the kicker. Hard to find. If you have a standard chevvy housing I would put that on your old starter for a core and keep the 225 housing.

the last one I bought and installed didn't allow for the little bracket that attaches to the block to be used; no place on the starter housing for it to attach.

The two bolts that go up thru the bottom are different location. The stagger is opposite for chev.

I replaced the starter on my '66' many years ago. My starter came from Big A (are they still around?) and the number was 72 9114S.

Yep, I kept the old starter and the box. You never know. The replacement unit has worked flawlessly for quite a few years.

like Mike, it's in a tool box drawer.
my front driveshaft is close, thought it might prevent breaking the snout off.

Yup, there is supposed to be:) Problem is most replacement starters don't have that threaded hole. Got a bracket hanging on the wall. The 231's I've seen don't have it..
