I own a 71 cj5 with a four speed , the reverse is to the left up by first gear. I cant tell if it’s a t 98 or t18 if someone could help me to identifying what it is i would apreciate it. It has a 225 v6 with a Dana 18 twin stick trans with Dana 27/ 44 axles. R)

    I can't read that.

I'm not aware of a factory 4 speed, nor a commonly swapped-in 4 speed in a '71 CJ with reverse left and up...

Can you get letters/numbers off of the tranny case?

Could be original - in that case it'd be a close ratio T-18. Not many of those were built though. A transmission swap is more likely. Post a picture of the floors and transmission covers. Take the transmission cover floor panel off and look for a tag under one of the cover bolts.

    <oops> Yes - left and up. Not a T-18.

The trans "could be" a Saginaw 4 speed, Muncie M series trans, Borg-Warner T-10, Ford Toploader series, all car transmissions. Hard to know without pics of the transmission. Most of these would have external shift linkage. There are others that I'm probably forgetting but these were all common swaps back in the day. Is this a car style transmission or a truck style with a granny low first gear? Internal linkage or external? Cast iron case or aluminum case? More info needed.....

T-10 and Super T-10's were both with that pattern. My '65 Dodge Dart came from the factory with the Super T-10, bench seats, 14" wheels and tires on the front, 15" on the rear with a 15" spare. I think it was a one off special order or Dealer special from that year. HY-PO 273 with dual-point ignition and a Carter AFB 4bbl. Got clocked at 140 + by the Nevada State Patrol in 1970. + was cause their speedometer wouldn't read any higher, and I was pulling away. Don't know what the rear was geared at, but you couldn't shift into 4th gear until you were going at least 55 mph on the highway. That was 3 grand on the tach, in 3rd. 3 grand in the '60 is 45 on the speedometer. Don't have any experience with the RockCrusher or any of the others. Don't remember any of the trucks having the reverse up next to 1st. Down by 2nd, up by 3rd and down by 4th. but none up by 1st.:driving:

I have a similar shift pattern, but my first gear is a crawl gear. I don't know what transmission I have, but it has a nice low first gear.

Nathan I'm 99% sure you have a sm420 (isn't your trans to left and down for reverse with big buldge on side of case) It was rather dark when I was there:)

Left and down, yeah you're right. I don't know if there's a bulge, I'll have to go look.

I've always though I had a T-18. Now I'm not sure. My shift pattern is : reverse is up and to the far right -----with 1st. up to the left;------- 2nd. down;------ 3rd. up mid right and----- 4th. down mid right. It's just a typical H pattern with Reverse out of the H up and to the right. Conclusions??

T18's came with two shift patterns. Early had reverse up and right of third, late had reverse right and down beside 4th. Same place, only one is up the other down. Go to Novack's knowledge base and get all the t-18 info you want............

T-10's, Muncie Car tranny 4 speeds, Toploader 4 speeds, and Saginaw 4 speeds all have a seperate lever and shaft for reverse. By flipping the lever down or up on the shaft you can change whether reverse is towards the dash or towards the seat. Pretty cool actually.

My first car was '69 Dodge Dart. Lots of fond memories in that car. Mine wasn't as cool as yours though........Nickmil

Both MOP and aallison specified Novak for details on the identification of various transfer cases. After reading the Novak article I pulled the floor plate up and looked at the top of the transfer case in my '71 CJ-5. As stated by Novak the T-18 uses the same case as the earlier T-98 and that in many cases the top casting will say T-98 when it's actually a T-18. Mine said T-98. I'm sure it is a T-18 and was the original equipment. Thanks for help.
