Thats a Trac Lok. Acts like an open when you really need it.

I thought the tracloc was only in 30 spline? Don't rebuild it. I have a spair one from a TJ sitting in my attic.

I'd go for a Power Lok. A lot more effective, stronger, and easily rebuildable.

Myself and someone else I know had the C-clip(s) holding the center pin in snap off during brake throttle modulation (BTM). Later the pin then started to come out against the ring gear, then the internals got to shifting around,.....BANG, time for a whole new rear end. Also, that appears to be the weaker old style Trac Loc. The newer ones have a raised casting boss around the opening. Trac Locs are easy to rebuild and the clutch packs are cheap.

Just sharing my experience with the Trac Loc. I switched to Powerlocks for a while, then to Detroits. Both work great, but I see a couple of E-lockers in my future:) .

Those early Trac Lok cases are weak and have been known to break in half under heavy loads.

So... If I understand this right, I have the only diff on the planet worse than a stock open dif. this diff is so bad it could be called the anti-diff.

    it figures...

anyone got a powerloc loaded with 4.27s for sale?

What has already been said about the trac-loc. Don't spend a dime on them. About a year ago I sorted through about 40 track locks and had to throw away about 35 of them due to case cracks, case worn out where the pinion shaft goes through, etc. Powerlock is much stronger and has many merits over other limited slips. If you need a 19 spline 4 series R&P has a couple of them laying around. One rebuilt and one gone through with virtually new but used clutches. That one has been customized to be nice and tight. They can be reached at 503-557-8911. I believe they also have one brand new 30 spline 4 series also. Nickmil

Flanged, one-piece axles in a 1970 will be 30 spline.

    Thanks.

so now the question is: do I

stay with my current 3.73 gears which do nicely on the paved roads but are probably too high for any serious off roading and reduce my overdrive to a mere toy and invest what little I can scrape together after the dif replacement on an SM420/SM465

    or

change to 4.27 or deeper gears, front and rear, new rear locker and keep my t14 and overdrive.

I have no place to go off-road at this point so road manners are somewhat a priority.

    opinions???

Much depends on where you wheel.

I run 3.73s and 33s... great low rpms for the highway. But I also run a T18, so I have about 59:1 in low/low for offroad. This is really about as low as I need for some of the rocky areas and stream beds...

...so my recommendation would be to sell the T14, sell the OD, keep the 3.73s and slap in a T18/SM420 or similar.
You'll end up with highway friendly gears, a nice deep low for offroad when you need, it a stronger tranny and one less component in your drivetrain.

    YMMV... :D
    Good luck!

    Here you go.
$289 for a brand new Power Lok (30 spline for 3.93-5.38 gears) is pretty cheap, though you could find cheaper used.

Don’t know if it helps your decision any, but with 33’s, 4.27’s and no overdrive, my engine spins a little over 3K RPM’s to do 65 MPH on the highway.

...while mine with 33s, 3.73s and no OD spins at about 2250 at 65 mph...
