Part of a heavy-duty swing-out rear carrier for spare tire and jerrycans, probably.

Unless your jeep had a previous life as a specialty vehicle for oil field or firefighting work, etc, and this is a unique mount for equipment.

In particular, Kayline is the brand name of the rack. It's period correct for the Jeep. Here's the one on my '69:

(y)Awesome info, thanks fellas! Guess now I have something to seek out at the wreckers/craigslist car swapmeets….

Do you happen to have a pic of the latching mechanism that interfaces with the mount?

Yes, an over-center latch, and the gas can blocks it from completely unlatching if it comes undone on a bouncy road. It never has though.

They also rust and get stuck if you don't lubricate them every 15 minutes or so....

I have a 67 CJ 5 with a relatively new Bestop soft top (both bikini and full top). I also have this piece of canvas that seems to wrap around the roll bars somewhere, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how it goes on. There’s a raised part that seems to go over the rear seat and snap onto the tailgate, but the front part with a plastic lip doesn’t go anywhere. Got it from the PO (my dad), who apparently did t once put anything but the bikini top on it since he bought it. Ideas? IMG_1279.jpeg IMG_1280.jpeg IMG_1281.jpeg

It reminds me of antique cars with a cover to enclose a top and bows when they are folded down, and not in use.

If it's not a bow pouch it could be a windshield cover for when the windshield is down.
I can't tell how big it is but that would explain the hard plastic strip.

Thats a top boot (some call it a parade boot).I still have the original one (red) from my Tux. The original Whitco tops were “convertible”, but in practice they were a pain to use. You had to release a sewn-in plastic ledge from the channel on the windshield frame, then you would fold both top bows all the way back until the bundle rested across the top of the tailgate. Tuck the forward section under, and wrap the boot around the bows and folded top. Mine doesn’t open flat like the one in the photos. Mine is more like a sleeve or envelope that you slide over the whole folded top, starting at the rear, and slipping over the bundle, then fastening snaps to the inner fender just below the rear cushions.
Our replacement top had a rope sewn in for the windshield attachment, so you had to feed it in the channel from the side, so our boot was never used again. The original Whitco plastic piece windshield frame piece took about three people to hold it in place the top was finally snapped at the rear corners, where tension held it.

Explains why the Brits refer to a car trunk as the "boot."

Then why do they call a roof/top a “ hood”, and a hood is called a “bonnet”?

Two nations divided by a common language.

Me: "If we hadn't won WWII for you, you'd be speaking German."
Brit: "If we hadn't lost the Revolution, you'd be speaking English."
