    Usually both front and rear axes will have one. Both should display the same ratio, but the individual tags may have info specific to each axel, such as a pos trac or other differences specific to the respective axle.

    In the case of Andrew's photo, the 44 represents number of ring gear teeth and the 9 represents the number of pinon teeth.
    44 / 9 = 4.89

    It should also have the BOG number(bill of goods), This is crosses to a list of the original configuration, ie gear ratio/limited slip and sometimes application when built). Which sometimes is stamped into the housing. Ron

    ........Me thinks that being the Reverse Engineering , halfast kinda guy that I am....one may find it's original location by lining up the bolt holes to both covers & then see which one it came from ? :shrug:

    That looks like the exhaust stud from the driver side that holds the oil dipstick bracket.

    It could be the bolt to secure the fuel pump heat shield.
