    Yes, a machine shop should be able to find a crack in the head, but it requires the head to be removed from the engine. If you go this route you will have to replace the head gasket anyways. When I had my motor rebuilt recently, the machine shop called and told me the head had a crack in it between the #2 and #3 spark plug holes. Yes, you remembered correctly about the bolt under the carburetor. Hopefully, it all turns out to be just a bad head gasket.
