    1, 2, & 3 are not factory. 4 is factory, with a plug installed.

I'll try to get a pic of my '73 later tonight, its bone stock except for the radio speaker a PO hacked into the passenger side.

Comes from the combination valve to signal a loss of pressure in either the front or back brake hydraulic circuits.

    ok.. now for questions..

    radio and speakers in dash...
what are the main obstacles to watch out for when doing this?

if I don’t drink scotch and like my beverage of choice in a cooler.. can I delete the glove box and use that space for tunes?

I have some lessons learned in this area that I will be happy to share with you when I have more time (would like to post some photos - possibly this evening?). Perhaps this should be a thread of its own with a subject line like "radio and speakers in dash" so that later searchers can find it easily.

On my '75 CJ-6 (the one I had before the current one) I put a radio in the dash to the left of the driver. There is enough room there, below the VIN sticker. It's ok for the driver, but out of reach of your passenger.

My suggestion is to buy or make a bracket to hang the radio under the dash. You can scoot the heater controls a few inches to one side or the other if you need to. Ideally you would get one of the Hammond project boxes and enclose the radio entirely. If you are handy with sheet metal, you can make a case like that.

Speaker placement is a problem. Hacking a single speaker into the dash is possible, but there is no really good location for a stereo pair. Again, I would avoid cutting more holes in the dash and instead figure out where to put a couple of compact outdoors speakers.

JMO - a radio in a CJ is of limited usefulness... especially now (for me) that I have become accustomed to quality indoors music. Even my garage system, which component-wise is pretty nice by car stereo standards, is really lacking compared to your typical indoor music environment. And the Jeep listening environment is both noisy and so open that you really can't hear the music well.

Ear canal headphones are one option if you really need tunes ... but those are illegal in most jurisdictions. And there is a reason why they are illegal. Books on tape may be another, if you are going to drive long distances.

Turns out I have a little time this morning. You want to be careful about the location of your cut out for your head unit. My PO had cut holes in the dash for 4" speakers and a head unit. This photo shows where he cut the head unit and right speaker holes (sorry, I don't have one of the left speaker hole right now, but will try to take one later today) - [IMG].

The problem with this location for the head unit is that most head units are 6-7" deep and they would bump up against the duct for the heater and stick out a couple of inches. Not the look I wanted and heck on the passenger's knees. After MUCH searching (that included marine radios) I found two head units that were 4.5" deep and would sit flush against the dash. One was very fancy (satellite radio, would play tunes from your i-phone, etc.) and therefore pricey. Since I don't have a top on my jeep, I didn't go with that one for fear of it being stolen. The other turned out to be perfect for me. It is a Clarion RG9451 - http://www.clarion.com/ca/en/produc...ty/RG9451/ca-en-product-pf_1259540728129.html. It's a pretty basic AM/FM radio with an auxiliary port for an i-pod, but it almost seems like it was made for jeeps - it's dust, water and vibration resistant. So far, it's worked great and the price was right, around $125 IIRC. Gotta run now, but I'll post photos later.

My specific problem with under the dash is going to be the fact that I am using a Jeep Air Heat/AC unit.. it’s an under dash mount like the CJ/YJ factory AC system.. it does eliminate the stock heater box, but I do still want to retain defrost…

I was thinking a speaker to the left of the driver and one in lieu of the glove box…

Might think about putting those speakers behind your head on both the left and right side of the cab.......If you have a roll bar or cage that becomes pretty easy to do. Speakers in the dash although fine for some never seem to be positioned well enough to hear in that noisy that noisy environment.

But I do hear fine in my YJ... with 2 stock 4x6 plates...

Yep the later model stuff is much better in sound deadening..............The old Jeeps are like riding in a tin can.
