Love to see how that Heating / AC system fits. Will that make it under an early dash? Pre 71 CJ?............send some pictures.

I certainly experience this at speeds over 30 mph, especially with just a bikini top . . . really have to crank the radio to hear it and the sound quality is very tinny since all I have are two 4" tweeters. But it's kinda nice to have the radio when I'm on the trail at lower speeds, especially using an ipod which I keep in the glove box. I'm not sure I would have installed a radio had the PO not already cut the holes in the dash. I know I wouldn't have cut the dash to do so since I want to keep my jeep as close to stock as possible.

Re. speaker placement I've stuck a couple of surface mount speakers to the inside of the cowl just above the side panel lips using some big a$$ magnets.

You may not be able to hear the speakers while cruising... but everyone else within three blocks will.

Another alternative is to use an amp with audio input as standard audio jack. That way you don't have the radio to mount in the dash and most of the time I'm where I can't get radio stations anyway. I used a Poly-planar brand marine unit but there are a number of units available on amazon. I've had it in my Triumph for a few years and has worked great with either phone or mp3.

Reviving this due to a new application in my '73. I just bought a BOSS MGR350B 240W round marine stereo for my CJ (looks just like a gauge). Has AM/FM/Bluetooth/Aux In/USB charger and sub outs. Cost me about $65 bucks off Amazon. I have it mated to 2 BOSS wakeboard tower speakers (400w) that mount on my 2in roll bar, right behind my head and the passenger's head. The pair cost about $75 bucks, so I'm not out much they get stolen. They are black, have a C clamp style mount, allen mounting bolts, and hang below the roll bar... can be infinitely angled up or down to preference I cut a 3 inch hole down on the left side of the dash panel, above the parking brake release. Honestly, this thing is the size of my Sunpro tachometer, setup for marine use, has a thick rubber seal between face and dash plate, and keeps with the same look as my tach and other guauges in the dash. It's subtle, looks great, plus I can reach it where I have it mounted. I can also aux my CB audio into it, so that I can actually hear it while moving. I've got the stereo mounted and the speakers mounted. I'll be wiring it all up in the next day or so. I'll report in on how it sounds/performs in my application.

I'd take those power numbers with a grain of salt.

Alright... everything is wired up now. Sounds really good, and it's loud enough that I can't stand it above half volume. I would recommend this setup for anyone looking for a low cost, water resistent, easy hookup system with some nice features (like Bluetooth and USB charging). Looks great in the dash, with an appearance like a gauge. The aux is perfect for plugging in your CB, too.

I may not be OEm but here how i mounted a speader into the dash and the radio under the dash. The gauge at left of radio is a fuel one, because i have a custom gaz tank.

I have another speaker onto the rollbar right above my head.

Also i did built small wood box for 6x9 speaker that i fixed over the rear fenderwell. Best picture i found about these.

Johneyboy... love your step/slider. Looks like a nice sturdy piece. I don't have anything on mine yet... gonna get my crack hung on that curved door opening getting in and out, it's just a matter of time. You fab that or buy?
