window washer

Was there ever a window washer on an early jeep?

 

Yup. Daughter's '70 has it and my '68 has the squirter in the cowl as well. Don't know what year they started. My '59 CJ-6 doesn't have the hole in the cowl for the squirter.

 

My 61 does not have one, but Herm does offer one, I think its around $40 if I remember right...I will be ordering one soon-ish...

 

I realy miss it on mine. Any idea how the original switch looked like and where is was mounted?

 

My 72 has a manal hand pump plunger. It looks just like the headlight, hazard, wiper knob, etc except it's on the other side of the steering column and you pull out on it repeatedly to squirt the fluid.

There is a bag on the left front inner fender for the washer fluid.

 

My '75 the pump squirted when you turned the wiper knob to the left. We had a blast when we rotated the nozzles to spray away from the windshield and onto many a unsuspecting occupant in the next car at a traffic light. Keep in mind I was driving a new '75 jeep just outta high school.

 

I wouldn't mind having one of those for mine, wonder if you can find them?
(I'd have to retrofit it to the flattie w/s)

 

I don't know quite where to find one except the one in my toolbox... I'm planning on reinstalling it later or I would just give it to you.

Hummm. A small point, but the washer on my 75, bought new by the wife in 75, activates the washer on either of the two speeds by pushing the knob IN. Still running the original switch.

All the way to the left is wipers off.

 

I am not sure about the original but the 3 wire switch I bought on E-bay is a 2 speed plus 'push in' (spring loaded) for the wiper washer motor. My '70 does have the washer nozzel on the cowl but haven't hooked it up yet.

 

That's a lot of information. Thanks. I will try to find an original switch and install a pump and bottle from an old car or so. One with a lot of power. Not the one I had on my CJ7. Tha water just got to the window.

 

The original on an early cj5 was a hand pump, you pulled it out and it squirted water from the bag mounted on the driverss fender. The pump was on the right side of the steering column if I remember right. My pump knob is in a box in the garage. the bag is long gone. The sprayer was mounted on the cowl, it is SS and looks like a barrel with 2 small round tubes on the side that are aimed at the windshield.

Pretty cool stuff here. The window washer would be a help on some of the trail ride I can think of. I usually git out and squirt the windshield with a water bottle or splash water on it from a creek using a frisbee (not the best method).

I would think it wouldn't be too hard to adapt something used.

 

as you can see in the pic, the hand pump body was made of white plastic and tended to crack on the reinforced mounts where it was rivited together. they can be found NOS but rare.

 

Somehow, mine is of a "push in" type with a big chrome knob. Maybe it is the Tuxedo Park upgrade? I had contemplated on converting the washer pump at one time, but decided, why fix it if it ain't broke.

 

I dont have a washer.. Ill be doing the Herm kit, or making one myself. Ive seen some of the old washer bags in reproduction for (ford) so im sure generic ones are out there that dont say fomoco on them.

That plus a cheap pump and a push button to activate it.... and obviously some tube....
