Welp, my free Jeep would not turn over. I soaked the cylinders for 2 weeks and finally pulled the head today.

    Got me a little problem.

Now, that looks familiar... you have my sympathy. But the good news is now you can rebuild it to new condition and you'll know it's done right.

yes, but now you have the fun of fixing something someone else wouldn't or couldn't. I love take something discarded and fix it. Makes me happy...

This does not have to be terribly expensive. I expect that will depend on whether you can get the pistons out without damaging them.

That's how I got my brown jeep! My dad bought it 20 years ago from his cousin with a seized engine. He soaked it for 10 years with PB blaster down the cylinders every couple weeks until it filled the engine and came out the exhaust. He then said I can have it if I want, so there began my search for a new engine and engine swap

You know, this might be the perfect opportunity for that adventurous soul that wants a diesel engine in his ECJ. If it was mine, I would certainly consider the swap.

    I don't know anyone in AZ....and how do you know I have a spare 4bt ???? :)

I would be all in if I wasn't already knee deep in a similar Cummins swap.

I think I better just leave this one the way it is for now...good idea though.

The rings on my free Jeep fell out in pieces in my hands. I agree you might not be in for TOO much and I also agree it is fun to DIY, you know what corners you cut and which you did not.. no mysteries.

Cylinders cleaned up at 30 thou but the rest of the motor is in really good shape. I had some high temp from Eastwoods for my Cummins swap and decided to put a little Ford blue on it to try it out....nice paint!

I had a broken exhaust stud...used a propane torch to heat it just a bit for removal....paint did not even discolor a little bit. We'll see how the paint looks a few years from now.

Getting there, I just had to do a complete rebuild. Might as well replace the clutch assembly and master cylinder while I'm at it. Hope to finish it up in September.

Almost there...tried to use the old fuel pump but I can't find which inlet gets the vacuum line. Hard to believe it would be so difficult. Doors are white now...got rid of the Christmas decor look!!!

Free is great. At least you "start out right" on the investment side of the equation. And, pretty much everything you do will be an improvement (you can hardly hurt it). And, at least it's a classic (imho) vehicle/something worthy of the effort.
