Thinking about 4.3 and SM465

No, you do not need a cast iron one, the factory put the sm 465 on alum bellhousings with an 11" clutch. Stock setup in a lot of pickups.

If you do go with a cast iron unit, be sure it will not interfere with your starter. Old bellhousings with the side mounts on them used a different starter setup. I do not know if they are compatible or not ----- just something to be aware of, and check out for yourself.

Take a look here, alum bellhousing from a P/U.

Ok then, I have a lot to learn. :D

So more than likely a pickup with a SM465 will have the 11 inch clutch? If so I'll use that bell housing if the hydro clutch off the 4.3 will work.

And still I don't know if the 4.3 bell housing has the 5 1/8 hole or the 4 11/16.

    Measure it???

The hole size is driven by the trans, not the engine.

If the engine was factory mated to a 465, then it should have the big hole.

I don't have the 4.3 yet, I'm going to look at this weekend.

Well turns out it's a TBI motor. It's in a 1989 GMC half ton pickup, he said I can take the truck over to my house to pull the engine and get the parts I want off it. I'm also getting another 4.3 with it that knocks, and the pedals with brakes. Seems like a good deal for $500 to me.

I heard the engine run and it is real smooth and makes no noises or smoke. The issue is the idle jumps around a little, he said it may be the TPS and the other engine has a good one on it.

    What do you guys think?

FWIW, these TBI motors are notorious for throttle body base gasket vacuum leaks, and faulty idle air control valves, both of which can cause erratic idle.
    Not a big deal.

It wasn't a vacuum leak, we had the engine running for about 5 minutes, after a minute or so the idle dropped down for a few seconds and then went a little high. After that it idled fine and did it one more time. Then it was fine, I'm leaning towards the IAC valve.

How important is a VSS, can I put one on my D18?

I don't have one, I thought the only use for those in a Jeep conversion was to look after newer electronic automatic transmissions.

FWIW I had an old Chev transfer case and the Jeep speedometer cable hooked right up to it, it was close to accurate. I swapped it for a Dana 300 and it's way off but still hooks up. I'm guessing the gear ratio of the CJ7 that my case came from had something way different than my 4.10's.

There are aftermarket vss's that go in line between the speedo drive and cable.
I'd put one in unless you want to take the chance on the iac not resetting itself properly and you like the check engine light on.

Where can I get one of those inline VSS?

Painless Performance makes one but last time I checked were kind of spendy. Most people who make conversion wiring harnesses for FI motors have them available. I'd do some searching around. I'm sure Howell, Affordable Fuel Injection, and others have them.

This could be a bad oxygen sensor. When you first start the engine, the comp. relies on just the temp. sensor and MAP to get the engine running. The reading from the o2 sensor doesn't get used by the computer until the engine warms up or has been running long enough. My guess is that when your idle drops after a minute is when the computer begins to take the signal from the o2 sensor. The o2 sensor sends an inaccurate reading so the computer tries to adjust and get the engine running properly.

Or it could be the 'actuating' and not the 'sensing'. So the IAC that you and Patrick have mentioned is also a culprit.

There's a test for the TPS. Basically, there's 3 wires: ground, 5 volts from the computer to the TPS, and variable voltage from the TPS to the computer.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll try to find a VSS that will work with my D18 transfer case.

Double R, do you have a VSS in your jeep?

Yup, #1 is the one you need. $75 is a decent price too. I think I paid around $100-$125 for mine years ago but that was before they were so available.

Cool, looks like I'll be ordering one of those soon. I need to save up $200 for one of those NOS speedometers that debella sells too.

I have no idle or running problems and no EGR but don't have a check engine light installed either.

    No VSS.

Same here, I don't have a check engine light installed.
