In looking to change the 57 CJ5 to 11 inch rear drums I looked at the tech section. I priced all parts listed and come out cheaper than I can get a kit (assuming I can get a good set of used backing plates). Are the parts in the tech write up complete? Also, I read in doing a search that Herm's kit does all 4 wheels. Is this info true? I emailed him to find out. His kit is $600.00 for drums and $600.00 for a front disc conversion.

    Morris 4x4
unfinned drums from Morris 4x4 59.99 each #994305
    wheel cylinder links Morris 4x4 $3.99 times 4 #48331
brake shoe retaining plate Morris 4x4 $4.99 times 2 #3201032

    Rest are NAPA
Shoes $42.59 # UPAE10AR front (Does both wheels) 6.50 core
    wheel cylinders $11.99 times 2 #up36017 and #up36018
brake shoe maxi-pack front 10.99 #up2238 (does both wheels)
self adjuster kit left #up80691 $13.29
    right #up80692
    finned drums #up6401259 $85.49 times 2

I believe these are all the parts listed which should make a complete kit less the backing plates. Am I right?

Where to buy backing plates? Are all the parts complete? Is the write up in the tech library pretty complete or is there another link to an article more complete? Thanks, Paul

Try looking at prices at www.rockauto.com - they seem to be the cheapest. NAPA will certainly be higher. You should be able to find everything you need by looking at a '72 CJ-5 - drums are $27, rear cylinders $8.80, fronts $12 something, shoes $32, no cores.

There's a '72 FSM at www.trailforge.com which will be a good reference for the brakes.

You'll need to find used backing plates. There is no source for new that I know of. If you want to use the mechanical parking brake that activates the rear shoes, be sure to get the bar that goes between the shoes and the lever that the parking brake cable connect so for both sides when you get your backing plates.

There are other parts needed other than just the backing plates. The wheel cylinder push rods (2 per backing plate) and the shoe retainer plate that goes on the anchoring post (1 per backing plate) are not available new. Most backing plates are grooved and must be welded and machined on the pads where the shoes ride. Can you do this yourself? All the rest of the parts are available new. You will need drums (2 per axle), self adjuster kits (2 per axle, 1 right and 1 left), hardware kit(1 per axle) and wheel cylinders (1 left, 1 right (front are different than rear). Price all the parts individually and then decide if it is cheaper to do it all yourself or not. If you decide you want the parking brake for the rears then you will also need the park brake levers and struts (levers are different right to left) as they are not available new either.

You might contact R&P at 503-407-7091. That's where Herm's been getting his kits lately or when he runs out of stock. Might as well go direct to the source if you can't find the parts yourself.... Not sure if they have any in stock but worth checking. Paul is a good guy to deal with...

I do know Herm and R&P have been looking into having the backing plates made, but not sure status on that.

i used 1969 ford bronco backing plates and push pins. I don't recall the price of the pins, but the backing plates ran about $25-30 each. You need the fronts. i used the bronco hardware/shoes with the jeep drums, since the bronco drums while heavier cast, didn't fit over the locking hub.

with a bit of patience, bronko front sets can be had on ebay when they swap out for discs. I was able to pick up a pair of backing plates with all hardware and good shoes for $35. then I went looking for drums...

I'll have to check out Morris 4x4. Never found those parts new before.
R&P has a basic web site at http://pwpinc2.qwestoffice.net/

They are not real computer savvy kind of guys but are old School Jeeper's. The site shows a little bit, but not anywhere near what they offer. Look around and if interested I'd call them direct.

What year Bronco? Bronco 2? So if I could find a complete set of Bronco drum brakes I would only need some new 11 inch 72-76 CJ drums?

This has been covered a lot here. If you search, you'll find plenty of threads on which vehicles can be brake donors.

These are 11"x2" Bendix brakes. Lots of different vehicles used them, including Jeep CJ, Jeep Wagoneer, early Bronco, Ford F-100 pickups, Mercury passenger cars, and probably many more that I'm not aware of. I know that all of these can be made to work, either bolting on or requiring some modification. Here's Rock Auto's list of which cars use the same brake shoes as a '72 CJ-5:

    DODGE D100 SERIES (1960 - 1964)
    FORD F-100 PICKUP (1961 - 1964)
    FORD PARK LANE WAGON 1956
    GMC 1000 SERIES (1961 - 1963)
    GMC 1500 SERIES (1961 - 1963)
    JEEP CJ5 (1972 - 1978)
    JEEP CJ6 (1972 - 1975)
    JEEP CJ7 (1976 - 1978)
    JEEP COMMANDO (1967 - 1973)
    JEEP DJ5 (1971 - 1973)
    JEEP GLADIATOR (1965 - 1967)
    JEEP J-100 (1965 - 1972)
    JEEP J-2500 (1965 - 1973)
    JEEP J-2600 (1965 - 1973)
    JEEP J-2700 (1965 - 1970)
    JEEP J-2800 (1965 - 1968)
    JEEP J-3500 (1965 - 1970)
    JEEP J-3600 (1965 - 1970)
    JEEP J-3700 (1965 - 1970)
    JEEP J-3800 (1965 - 1971)
    JEEP J-4500 (1970 - 1972)
    JEEP J-4600 (1970 - 1972)
    JEEP J-4700 (1970 - 1972)
    JEEP J-4800 (1971 - 1973)
    JEEP JEEPSTER 1967
    JEEP JEEPSTER COMMANDO (1971 - 1972)
    JEEP WAGONEER (1965 - 1973)
    JEEP WAGONEER CUSTOM 1973
    MERCURY MEDALIST (1956 - 1958)
    MERCURY MERCURY (1949 - 1951)
    MERCURY MONTCLAIR (1955 - 1956)
    MERCURY MONTEREY (1950 - 1956)

This gives you an indication where to look, but is not definitive. Some of the dates are wrong, for example, the 71-72 Commando should be 72-73, and the F100 used these brakes at least through 66. Again, there's no guarantee that all these backing plates will bolt on without machining, and whether the backing plate offset is right. I know that an old-school Jeep upgrade was Mercury brakes, so they can be made to work, but I don't know more details.

Part of what R&P and Herm are offering with their parts is their knowledge and tooling to make the parts they sell work as a bolt-on kit. I doubt that R&P is selling only Jeep or only Bronco backing plates - they may be selling F100 parts that have been machined to fit. Nothing wrong with that ... there were many many more F100s built than CJs. Whatever they are selling, they are guaranteed to bolt on, be appropriate to teh application and be in good condition.

I want to upgrade the rears to 11 inch drums...the front I was thinking about upgrading to discs for better braking. I plan on driving my jeep on the road quite a bit, more so than off road. I still plan on off road though. Also, I have read in searches here that discs offer better stopping for the jeep and are not any more difficult to upgrade the fronts than a drum upgrade.

Shoot, if you're going to keep the TC mounted parking brake, just send R&P the $275 and be done. I don't think you can beat that price by much, and your time is worth something.

I havn't called them yet. Is that price for a rear set of everything or just backing plates? I will have to wait and call as it is only 8:30 eastern time and I am in NC.

You want the front set if you keep your transfer case parking brake. The rears have a place for the later parking brake cable, and that is the only difference between front and rear.

$275 is for an axle set. Includes everything you need from the backing plates outward.

NIce.. Herm's set is $600.00 per axle. Are most people running discs up front?
