I used to do these almost on a weekly basis. Grind the weld all the way around the inner C until you see the separation between it and the axle tube. Put some heat around the outside of the C and give it a whack. Easy, peasy.

But you obviously have no vested financial interest in it. Wonder what is under the rest of that spiffy sheetmetal. Ryan needs to give us the details.

    This.

What I found worked best for me was use a cutoff wheel tight to the backside of the “C” down close to the tube then grind to that point. It helped me from grinding too far into the “C” and made the grinding easier. Sometimes I’d do a series of cuts from the c to the tube working toward the center to make it easier.

This is great info. I'm pretty sure I'll need to rotate the C's on the front 44 I have for my flatfender.

That thing is immaculate. It has a healthy fuel injected Chrysler 360 in it, and the interior is perfect.

That is real nice. Don't scratch a corner on that bad Larry. I don't know the last time I saw one that clean that wasn't new. Is it equipped with the third pedal?

Those wire ties on the hoses look really out of place under there. Interesting hood arrangement too. But keep it away from any tall grass on a trail-------

I would say a 44, but maybe driver drop, and 6 lug.

I think that’s a wide-track, so width could be an issue, and most likely driver-side drop.
There were a few years where the front D44 had a weird vacuum-actuated disconnect built into the front diff cover, it could be that era. Would not recommend. The rear could also be a model 20. Not as undesirable as the CJ versions (I believe, but could be wrong) these had 1-piece axle shafts. The tubes are still weak and prone to spinning.

Edit: the disconnect was only in 82-84 models with the NP229 t-case

Wouldn't a Roxor axle be the way to go nowadays, if you want a D44?

I just meant there has been a lot of debate about the roxor 44.

Yes, Dana 44s front & rear, driver-side drop on the front, 6 x 5.5" bolt pattern. These would be considered narrow-track FSJ axles. Wide-tracks were used on the older Cherokee Chiefs. I've had several FSJs, and did install a '90 Wagoneer axle under the front of my old CJ-10a (paired with an Isuzu D44 rear).

We're using one of these front axles for my son's Willys pickup. IIRC it's about 1" wider than the stock pickup axle, considerably wider than a CJ. We converted to 5 lug with F150 hubs and Scout rotors.

Yes, with stock knuckles, width is around 60.5"...close match to TJ width, 4" wider than wide-track CJ, and ~10" wider than narrow-track CJ. This is my old '86 CJ-10a with those axles...same tub width as earlier CJs.
