Be interested to find out if that's what it ends up being. I mentioned that back in his other thread a few weeks ago. Warmup time is critical w/my Solex, if the carter acts the same way I wouldn't be surprised.

    SIDSCJ,
My Carter acts the same, it will start up fine, idle, no problem, if I head out quick it sputters at the high range rpm before shifting then it will be fine again. My 56 "had" rubber hoses on the inlet of the pump and carb and I found they were trash and falling apart so I went to all new metal fuel line (not copper) from the filter and pump now it is safer but still sputters when cold. After she warms up, Katie bar the door, it runs great.

I wonder if you could use the phenomenon to chill a sixer so you have something to do while you wait for your engine to start again.

Even down here, when it's cold my old stuff has to warm up completely or they won't run worth a crap.

Carb icing. Never would have thought of that. Should have.

back when I was flying, I flew cessna's. Little 2 and 4 seaters. IIRC, at altituede, if you are going to pull the throttle back, you pull on the carb heat to prevent carb icing.

Never thought about it getting cold enough to cause that to happen in a car. Since I live in Florida, even more so..........

And you were ready to boot it to the curb. I wonder what you would do if Jennifer Anniston started eating crackers in bed.

(You would probably wake up from your dream) :D

I bet that old engine might have enough rust and crud built up inside the water passages to impede the coolant flow and affect the amount of heat getting to the intake manifold? Possible? How's the radiator...have you ever done a drain and flush on the system with some Prestone flush 'em out?

I know the insides of my '56 engines water passages are plumb gross. Ain't no way I'd try to run it with all that crud in there. Of course, it sat long enough for all the coolant to evaporate away too.
