it runs fantastic when the weather is nice.
and i dont need it to get to work!
thats the main reason why i bought it
it breaks my heart but i am starting to seriously think about selling this cool old jeep.
    and buy something reliable.

Are all the ignition wiring connections tight? well soldered? Is the air filter an oil bath, closed paper, or an open element type?
The point, is it possible that splash or spray is getting in the carb?

these are all probably idle threats
but if i had any brains i'd be on craigslist right now trying to trade it for a toyota pickup.

    i cant trust it.
and i need reliable transportation for work.
it gets horrible gas milage and isnt truly hiway legal because it is so slow.
maybe i should just tarp it.
and in a year or two when i have the money saved up.
drop it off at a mechanic and tell him to call me when all the bugs are fixed.
but i know if i keep it .
i am going to take it for a drive one day and THEN it will crap the bed way out in the middle of nowhere.
    it's a rich mans toy
    it aint a car
and it aint a trustworthy 4x4

does pertronix use the condenser at all? if so bill, this could be a $3 fix, and a condenser causes all these symptoms when they go bad. I just dont know if it even matters with the pertronix....from what i gather its heat related in cold weather, sounds like a vapor lock as well, but it would be worse in warmer tempatures.

No. Pertronix replaces the points. Condenser is there to store excess voltage to keep arcing at the point contacts to a minimum.

A coil would keep getting hot and quiting, water in the fuel is a real good bet or water getting in the distributor, check for arcing in the cap or condensation inside the cap when its cool. Those little metal gates for setting the dwell are famous for letting water in.

i have had it with this P.O.S.
i dont trust it to go around the block and i cant count on it.
i am ready to part it out and crush whats left.

Reminds me of a quote from Jim Valvano (Former NC State Basketball coach), "Don't give up, don't ever give up"

My wife and I inherited what we were told was a running 1957 CJ-5. Well it did run, in less than 6 months the list includes wheel cylinders (all four), brake lines, alternator, starter, flywheel ring gear, and master cylinder. I am just looking forward to warmer days when the bugs are worked out and the jeep can once again be enjoyed.

    So Don't give up.

I know your feelings, but before you attack it with a hammer, I need the right fender....
I replaced the coil on my 64 and cured my missing problem..
    Good luck.

It wouldn't take much to loose the fire on a four banger, how bout some plug wires shortin out. fire it up at night and you can see the arcing. Or maybe its flooding out, float stickin a little. Choke stickin?

Are you still running a ballast resistor? If so, check to see if it's hot next time it starts running poorly. If it gets hot, it may be losing continuity and shutting down your ignition. I had this happen on my 3B a few years ago.

    bought one today
    no

i dumped HEET in the tank on the way home.
but it was running great anyway.
i never know when it is going to take a dump.

i will just have to see tomorrow morning.
    if it acts up
i am parking it for the rest of the winter.
taking it anywhere is a gamble

I had a problem in an old F150 once, which was pretty much the same. I spent months trying to figure out what the problem was, It would run great, and then sputter and then ultimately die out.

After coils, ignition boxes, wires, etc. etc., the problem ended up being a pinhole in the fuel pick-up tube in the fuel tank. It would work for a while and then suddenly lose prime.

Maybe something to look in to. I finally figured it out with one of those glass in-line fuel filters. I could see it bubbling and then losing prime. Just another idea, being no-one had mentioned it.

it gets one more chance in the morning.
    if it acts up.
i am putting it in a snowbank in the yard and leaving it there.
i dont have any more patience.
then down the road i'll decide what to do with it.
