I think the reason most of them do not have breathers is because they are open to the steering colomn. this is a good and a bad thing. when I completed my rebuild I filled till it ran out of the filler hole then replaced the plug. when I drove it, oil would leak out around the bottom of the column tube. I removed the tube again and sealed the contact area with sealer. there is a small hole right in the clamp area of the column that is pointing up, this is where mine breaths.

The real death of these boxes is leaving the jeep out in the rain without a good seal on the horn button or driving through water deeper than the box, in either case the box gets water in it and the lowest place to sit in
the box happens to be the lower worm shaft bearing...

by looking at pics of different years of these boxes it appears that the fill on the side of the box was the earliest design. probably went away because it is nearly impossible to fill while installed in the jeep. the later boxes moved the fill to the top of the box and the location seems to be so that the upper bearing is at lease half covered with oil when filled. all of the box covers I have seen have the cast in boss for the lower fill, but none of them use it. :coffee:

Found out why it only goes 4.25x around....it binds against the V6. Plus I can feel some slack/play on the steering gear arm's connection to the sector shaft just by wiggling the arm. Not a guud sign.

Can I rebuild this puppy while installed? I don't want to have to take the steering wheel off either. 4WDH & Krage don't seem to have kits for the V6 boxes, just the 4-banger. So where to get V6 box parts?

Ya Mike yer right It'd be silly to look back...........back at half the frame you hacked up in the process.

All the places I've looked don't mention a separate V6 box rebuild kit. Where to get those parts? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

My frame could be put back and you would never know the difference, unless I told you.;)
Besides you wouldn't know that my saginaw wasn't a factory install, you're just used to seeing hack jobs.

If so they don't say V6. I'd hate to order stuff and have it be wrong, and I shouldn't have to ask 'em specifically for V6 stuff they should just say it!

Mike, just returning the dig. ;)

Guys..GUYS! a little investigation from company to company will get you through. Krage sells the bushings and seals for the large box. look for parts to fit the 15/16 sector shaft. I don't think he sells a kit for the box or the sector shaft though. through phone calls with a few of the companies I learned that a M38A1 worm shaft is the same as the v6, but the length might be slightly different. the worm tube bearings Krage sells for the 4 cyl box will fit the v6...

My advice: Call them on the phone
    Krage 1-731-926-1004
    Northstar Willys 1-888-463-5337
    walcks 1-610-852-3111

Krage cannot get you all of the parts together, but the bushings bearings and seals will get you through if your sector and worm are ok.

If you follow the time honored tradition: filling any gear box with a fill plug, fill it as much as will stay in with the fill plug removed and the vehicle setting level, then don't forget to put the plug back in ;) . what you fill it with is a matter of much debate.

    :? With that wisdom then,

The '64 box tells me "fill me up to the plug, it'll pretty much fill up the whole box."

The '71 box tells me, "Hippo, fill me up to the plug. Ya only need 1/3 of the box full"

The '66 box says "I have a fill plug?!?? :?"

So......how much fluid are these things supposed to take? And why are my Ross boxes talking back?!? :D
